📌 Amy Pope is the new director general of the IOM - UN Migration. Two of her main priorities in this position are "solidifying IOM's leadership on climate-induced migration and increasing legal and regular migration pathways for people compelled to move," she told The New Humanitarian. Revisit a UNU-CPR Policy Brief authored by Research Fellow Chung Jin-Ho which discusses the interrelated challenges associated with climate-related mobility and urbanization in the Global South: "Understanding Climate-related Mobility in Contexts of Urbanization” Building on the key findings and recommendations from a recent Migration Policy Roundtable hosted by United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR) and the Migration for Development and Equality (MIDEQ) Hub, the brief discusses how these interrelated systems impact individuals in the Global South, particularly those who move to cities. GLOBAL CPO (CHRO) | STRATEGIC LEADER & ADVISOR | CULTURE TRANSFORMATION | EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE | TALENT ARCHITECT | DEI | FUTURE OF WORK | PEOPLE INSIGHTS | ESG | START UP & FORTUNE 500
Canada Day, formerly known as Dominion Day, commemorates the formation of the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. This marked the confederation of the initial four provinces – Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia – under one federal government. It was the genesis of what we now recognize as modern Canada, a momentous event that laid the foundation for the country’s growth and expansion. Canada Day marks the birth of a nation and celebrates the rich history, diverse culture, and shared values of the Canadian people. It is a time when Canadians take pride in their country’s cultural diversity and heritage. In recent years, Canada Day has also provided a platform for acknowledging the country’s Indigenous peoples’ histories and cultures and the ongoing process of reconciliation. This acknowledgment of past injustices is a crucial step towards healing and fostering a more inclusive society. I’m proud to be Canadian. I’m thankful that my parents had the opportunity to immigrate here and that we are part of what makes up Canada’s diverse identity. However, I am also aware that many immigrants have experienced racism and xenophobic attitudes. Racism remains a frequent experience for Black, Indigenous, and other people of colour in Canada. Our diversity, while a source of strength, is imperfect. For some, Canada Day may not be a day of celebration. Yet, it offers an opportunity to reflect, open our hearts and minds, and reaffirm our commitment to addressing systemic racism. As we celebrate Canada Day, let us look towards the future with hope and determination. Let us commit to building a more inclusive, equitable, and just society where every Canadian can feel proud and valued. Together, we can continue to shape a Canada that truly reflects our shared values of diversity, compassion, and unity. #CanadaDay2024 #Reconciliation #IndigenousPeoples #UnityInDiversity #ReflectAndReaffirm #HopeForTheFuture

Canada's reputation on the world stage as a welcoming nation is well-established. However, it’s important to recognize that not all newcomers experience the same level of support. Black refugees and asylum seekers often encounter specific challenges; systemic anti-Black racism, discrimination, xenophobia. “Welcoming” refugees and having them sleep on the sidewalk is inhumane. This is a full blown crisis. In the short term, the federal government needs to step up and provide housing support. More broadly, given the unique challenges and systemic barriers they face, we need to reimagine settlement support for Black people seeking refuge and asylum in Canada. cc: Diana Chan McNally, Joanna Lavoie

🧡 September 30, 2023 marks Orange Shirt Day as well as Canada’s third annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On this day, we honor survivors and reflect on our individual and collective commitments to reconciliation. As we reflect on this day, the statement “every child matters” stands as a reminder of those children who did not make it home. As the horrific confirmation of unmarked graves continues at former residential school sites, we must acknowledge this ongoing period of grief and the trauma this has caused. As Canadians, we must take it upon ourselves to listen, learn and share the truth of Indigenous folks. Positive Space Consulting acknowledges the role the social work profession has played in the deep injustices and perpetrated violence against Indigenous peoples. As social workers, we must work to dismantle these practices, actively participate in reconciliation, and respect the rights and self-determination of Indigenous peoples. Let this day serve as a catalyst for change. Together, we can contribute to the creation of a more inclusive and just society where the experiences and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples are celebrated and respected.
