"The most important person you've never heard of." #MovieMonday That's how the documentary "Heather Booth: Changing the World" describes the woman who created the modern framework of strategic organizing. Pick a decade. Heather Booth led social justice campaigns in it. As a student, Booth participated in civil rights protests and traveled to the South to register voters. (She even met her husband at a sit-in.) In the 1960’s, she founded the Jane Network to provide underground (and safe) abortions before Roe v. Wade. In the 1970’s, she used funds from an equal pay lawsuit to start the Midwest Academy to train women organizers in organizing strategy. In the '80's she helped propel Jesse Jackson's historic presidential campaign. 1990's? Electing the first Black woman US Senator (Carol Moseley Braun) 2000's? Immigration defense. Voter access. 2010's? Financial reform. Health care. Her leadership continues today on issue and political campaigns and mentorship of young organizers (or not that young, in some cases 🙋♀️ ). Heather’s visionary leadership and down-to-earth personality shine through in the film. She’s a driver in movements for justice and is never too busy to reply to an email or answer a question. She even took a few minutes to write this about me: "Mira is such a talented and values driven social change organizer and movement builder." Whoa. When one of the feminist godmothers of organizing said this about me, I knew I was doing something right. Intending to serve, I joined the public sector but soon faced glass ceilings and "firsts" that I overcame with persistence. As the first woman and woman of color in several positions I have held, it was tempting to bask in the glow of that singular identity. But here's the real talk: being the "first" is not the endgame. It's the ripple, not the splash that truly counts. I've sat in countless briefings, meetings, and community meetings where I wasn't just the only woman but the one carrying a torch for those who weren't in the room. And what I've realized is this - my legacy isn't about being the "first" in anything; it's about being a relentless advocate for justice, equality, and empowerment. This is about something other than checking off a box in the history books. It's about creating a narrative so strong that it holds the door open for a flood of diverse voices to come through. It's about not just making it to the table but rebuilding it. In the public sector, where policies and decisions can affect millions, having a seat at the table is not just a privilege; it's a responsibility. Here's to the women in public service who refuse to be remembered for their novelty but for their courage. To those who aren't satisfied with making history but are determined to shape the future for all. We stand tall, not because we are the first, but because we are part of an unstoppable tide changing the public service landscape. And that is a legacy worth leaving. As we honor these 'firsts,' let's amplify the why. Why we stand at these crossroads, why we push through the impenetrable, why we speak when the room falls silent.
