“The fact is, the vast majority of young people go through school without a sense of purpose. Our school system does not foster it. The majority of schools and districts remain compliance-focused and attend narrowly to the flawed set of outcomes represented by our state’s accountability system, like test scores, attendance rates, suspensions, etc.” Roman Stearns thanks for sharing your story, the interaction with your son and his friend, your experience within Cajon, and your commentary about what is missing in schools. I often find that when parents experience these moments with their kids, they realize, in a new and more vivid way, how important early exposure to the world of work is and how important it is for kids to have meaningful conversations with caring adults about their futures. It’s a reminder of how learning about careers, by using job titles and student interests, provides broad exposure for the types of real opportunities that are available to kids, especially those who have little exposure to the world of work. As you rightly share- much of the credit goes to Dave Miyashiro and a board with as much foresight to understand such a gap exists in our schools. 👑King’s Speech 2024: What’s in it for schools? King Charles III gave a speech last week, setting out the legislative priorities for the government over the next year-long session. Here are some of the things the proposed laws are set to achieve: ✅Bringing trusts into the inspection system and enable direct intervention for underperforming schools and trusts; ✅Require all schools to teach the national curriculum; ✅Free breakfast clubs in every primary school; ✅Limit the number of branded items of uniform and PE kits that a school can require; ✅Require all schools to cooperate with the LAs on school admissions, SEND inclusion and place planning and more..... Did you know that the charter school movement has been gaining momentum since the late 1980s, and it's only getting stronger? According to UsNews and World Report, charter schools operated in 35 states back in 2000-2001. Fast forward to today, and that number has risen to 45 states, with West Virginia adopting a charter school law in 2019! 🌎 Enrollment in charter schools has been on the rise, too! 📈 In the 2021-2022 school year, nearly 3.7 million students were enrolled in charter schools nationwide, making up about 7% of all public school students. AAU President Barbara R. Snyder underscores the vital role of diversity in education and academic success. In the face of The Florida Department of Education's actions against DEI, remaining silent does a disservice to students, faculty, and the AAU's commitment to DEI.
