OMA’s David Gianotten and Chiaju Lin have designed the Metropolitan Village in Taipei – a high-rise residential tower in the Xinyi central business district. The 23-storey building is a vertical village shaped by the increasingly fluid boundary between living and working in post-pandemic Taipei, and the city’s diverse urban conditions. The Metropolitan Village consists of volumes that share a central services core. The volumes – each with a distinctive façade – interlock with each other to create more than 30 different living unit types that support various post-pandemic lifestyles. The building has shared facilities on different floors, which create layers of social spaces in Taipei. The building site is defined by the front and back sides that are distinctive in scale and character: the front side faces a 40m wide main road of the Xinyi commercial area; the back side is a 6m wide street within the Wenchang district infused with local daily activities. The volumes forming the Metropolitan Village respond to the different proportions of the buildings in Xinyi and Wenchang. The main façade is composed of a curtain wall system and aluminum panels that form a durable skin for the machine for living in. Where the living spaces that require minimal privacy are located, patterned glass – commonly used in the interior of old Taiwanese apartments as partitions – has been used for the balustrades. Activities behind the patterned glass become a mosaic indicative of domesticity. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027. Images by WAX Architectural Visualizations https://lnkd.in/eB3q3fYQ

Budapest ONE and Etele Plaza are two pillars of a new city centre, South Buda in District XI, Budapest. The biggest #architectural challenge in both projects was to combine the size of the building and the human scale. 🏗️👥 Paulinyi & Partners did the same initial research in both cases but ended up with entirely different structures because of their various functions. The plaza site was a peripheral area to host a whole city centre later on, in which the building would merge into the future architectural fabric without being ostentatious. The main entrance, with its vast glass wall, gives a cross-section of the world inside. This is not common in mall architecture today, but we wanted to make Etele Plaza an outward-facing, open building, not just a shopping centre but an exciting new meeting place for the people of South Buda. 🤝 #futureal #southbuda #eteleplaza #budapestone

Soaring Above Architectural Grandeur: A Bird's Eye View of the World's Second tallest Building With a towering height of 2,073 feet, China's Shanghai Tower claims the prestigious rank of the world's second-tallest skyscraper. Initially begun in 1997, its construction encountered financial pauses, resulting in a gradual ascent to completion. Dazzlingly swift, its elevator raced at 20.5 meters per second, briefly reigning as the globe's second-fastest, until surpassed by Guangzhou CTF Finance Center's 21 meters per second in 2017. A creation of the esteemed Gensler firm, Shanghai Tower stands as a symbol of architectural magnificence. Owned by the Shanghai Municipal Government, it punctuates the city's financial district, Pudong, with its 128 floors and remarkable array of 270 wind turbines. Divided into nine cylindrical zones, the tower marries form and function. Each zone houses delightful gardens, inviting cafes, and retail corners. All nine harmonize within a glass-clad exterior, uniting as a singular architectural masterpiece. Captivatingly, Shanghai Tower clinches the title of the world's second-tallest building based on usable floor height, an honor complementing Burj Khalifa's tallest structural peak. #shanghai #civilengineering #architecture #civilengineer #architects #mechanicalengineering #construction #civilconstruction #buildings #buildingconstruction
