Though not originally native to Texas, the ring-necked pheasant has become a bit of a West Texas phenomenon. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department regularly monitors pheasant populations, and their findings report that one of the top factors influencing the population of pheasants in Texas is the availability of CRP lands in tandem with healthy playas. Together, this provides the cover and nesting grounds pheasants need to thrive and reproduce. Here at Playa Lake Farm & Ranch, we've done everything we can to bring playas and grasslands back to their native states, making many of our properties ideal locations for this non-native, ring-necked phenomenon to survive. What are San Francisco's urban coyotes really eating? 🍽️🐺 UC Davis Ph.D. student Tali Caspi has spent the past two years trekking through San Francisco’s neighborhoods, cemeteries, and soccer fields to uncover the surprising dining habits of these clever urban canines. Caspi’s research involves gathering stool samples from live coyotes and whiskers from coyotes killed via vehicle collisions for lab analysis. What Caspi has uncovered so far is groundbreaking and has the potential to transform how people understand and study coyotes in the future. Early findings reveal these urban coyotes consume more human food than previously thought. “I’ve found a whole bunch of weird stuff,” Caspi told SFGate. “I’ve found chocolate. I’ve found mango. I’ve found grapes. But the biggest, most frequent offender is chicken.” This chicken could come from various sources, such as discarded dog kibble or nuggets from trash cans. However, human handouts are a major issue. Caspi has seen people leaving out rotisserie chickens and tortillas, mistakenly believing coyotes are starving or hoping to avoid interactions with their domestic animal companions. As is true in most areas, feeding coyotes in San Francisco is illegal and harmful. It leads to habituation, which causes coyotes to lose their natural fear of humans, ultimately increasing interactions and the potential for conflict. “There’s a big misconception people have that if they see them wandering around the city, they must be starving and need our help,” Caspi said. “But they don’t — and trust me, they’re definitely not starving.” In addition to being adept scavengers, coyotes are capable hunters, preying on squirrels, gophers, and even venturing to the California coastline for a meal, similar to when several coyotes feasted on a fin whale that washed ashore in 2021. To #coexist and keep coyotes wild and safe, don't feed wildlife, feed pets indoors, secure trash, and clean up bird seed and fallen fruit. 📷 Sheryl Hester

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has released a revised draft of its wolf management plan, which recommends holding the state population at about 1,000 wolves. The draft updates a plan released in November that didn’t set a population goal, opting instead for advisory committees to recommend policies based on local wolf (Canis lupus) numbers. The new draft still doesn’t set a hard goal, but its guidelines consider 800 to 999 wolves as a stable population. Lower numbers suggest the population could be allowed to grow. Higher numbers suggest it should be reduced.
