Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2024 which commemorates the Soviet Red Army’s liberation of the Nazi murder factory at Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland on January 27, 1945. For twenty years it has been the mission of HFA to preserve the memory of the Holocaust as captured on authentic vintage motion picture film. These rare motion picture records are available to legitimate historians, scholars and documentary filmmakers. This day in Holocaust history: Fritz Hippler’s antisemtic propaganda hate film “The Eternal Jew” (Deutsche-Film-Gesellschaft, 1940) had its first official Reich premiere at the Ufa-Palast am Zoo theatre in Berlin on November 28, 1940. This horrible so-called ‘documentary on the problem of world Jewry,’ was intended to be the sinister blueprint for the “Final Solution” during the insidious nightmare years of the Holocaust in indoctrinating the minds of the unsuspecting populace in Germany proper as well as in the conquered territories prior to official deportations of Jews throughout Europe. The production was widely circulated in the Nazi concentration camps to the SS guards who became willing genocidists. The film’s director was sentenced for one year in prison for his part in the heinous production as ‘Reichsfilmintendant’ under Joseph Goebbels as an honorary SS-Oberstürmbannführer officer. Contemporary historians have often confused Veit Harlan’s antisemitic costume epic “Jud Süß” (TerraFilmkunst, 1940)with Hippler’s diabolical film. This film is heavily restricted as to its usage as archives possessing prints of the film (including HFA) are weary of screening it for obvious reasons, especially given the current situation in contemporary society with the rise of hate and extremism. This day in Holocaust history: the infamous Nuremberg Race Laws were entered into German law on September 15, 1935 eighty-eight years today. This was the first such legislative action taken directly against the Jews in Germany which was the so-called legal foundation laying the groundwork for the Holocaust to come a few years later. HOLOCAUST FILM ARCHIVE maintains original film material on this historical event in an unedited version depicting the actual signing of the infamous laws and policy speeches by Hitler and Goering during the 7th Reich Party Congress in the medieval city of Nuremberg.
