World Braille Day on January 4 is celebrated to honor the birth of Braille’s inventor, Louis Braille. Braille’s gift to the world has brightened the lives of millions of people around the world who are blind or visually impaired, and they benefit from his work every day. The day also acknowledges that those with visual impairments deserve the same standard of human rights as everyone else.  Background Eye conditions are remarkably common. The World Health Organization estimates that globally, at least 1 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, has advanced the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The Convention considers Braille essential for education, freedom of expression and opinion, access to information and social inclusion. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015, further pledges that no one will be left behind in the aim to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives. Allyship starts with a belief in equality. But that's just the beginning. It means leaning into acceptance of lived experiences. Actively fighting against oppression. Truly understanding your own privilege and using it to stand with and for others so that we all benefit from the steps toward equality. There's always been purposeful effort by Mediavine team members to make sure we can all show up exactly as who we are and be accepted wholly. At a time when anti-transgender rhetoric and legislation are growing at alarming and dangerous rates, it is crucial that Americans hear from transgender people about their lives and how the current political and cultural climate can be harmful to them. Today, we launched “Here We Are,” a ground-breaking video campaign that shares the real stories of transgender people, in a time when 71% of Americans claim they’ve never met someone who is transgender and when anti-transgender rhetoric from politicians and some in the media continues to rise. Most Americans are exposed to trans issues through media-biased narratives. GLAAD and GROUND Media’s new campaign dispels these misconceptions to introduce Americans to transgender people and their supportive families who showcase that trans identity is real and that everyone deserves to be who they are and live safely. During Black History Month, it's essential to recognize and amplify the voices of Black individuals with disabilities. Black Disabled Lives Matter advocates for the intersectional experiences of Black people living with disabilities, addressing systemic inequalities and advocating for justice and inclusion. This month, let's honor the contributions and resilience of Black disabled individuals, elevate their stories, and work towards creating a more equitable and accessible world for all. As we celebrate Black History Month, it's crucial to shine a light on the often overlooked but incredibly important intersection of race and disability. Black Disabled Lives Matter is a movement that highlights the unique challenges faced by Black individuals with disabilities, from systemic barriers to access to healthcare and education, to disproportionate rates of violence and incarceration. This month, let's have conversations that center around the needs and experiences of Black people living with disabilities. It's about recognizing their resilience, amplifying their voices, and advocating for meaningful change. I was honored to speak to Sports Info Solutions, sharing my story as part of Disability Pride Month. I'd like to thank Mark Simon and SIS's DEI Committee for having me, and for their generous donation to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation on my behalf. With disability advocacy so important to me, and with my intersectional identity underrepresented in the sport industry, sharing my journey in these spaces is something I truly value, as it allows me to advance conversation around disability — conversation not often had in sport. As I reflect on opportunities like these, the vulnerability they require always sticks out to me. Sharing struggles and recounting barriers that I've faced in a society not made for me is not easy. Sometimes it is hard to find the words, and that's difficult for me, because I care so deeply about appropriately articulating my lived experiences. I take pride in my role as a disabled woman in sport, as it demonstrates to others with similar identities that they too can pursue a life and career that is self-determined and driven by passion. As I myself am living this truth, I am committed to continuing my work in disability advocacy, even when I feel as if I don’t have all the right words. As a young professional, I am so appreciative of every opportunity to grow and, at the same time, make a positive impact. The value is evident. We need to advance conversation around disability. Disabled individuals deserve equitable access to jobs, with accessible and fair hiring practices, and so much more.
