🏀 San Antonio Spurs Builds Largest Mass Timber Facility in Sports! 🪵UPDATE: The San Antonio Spurs have inaugurated the "Victory Capital Performance Center," a state-of-the-art facility that is not just the envy of the NBA but also a marvel in sustainable construction. 🚧This $510 million investment is the largest mass timber facility ever built for a professional sports franchise, setting new standards in engineering, architecture, and sustainability. 🔍 Why This Project is a Game Changer: 1️⃣ Innovative Mass Timber Construction: Designed by ZGF Architects and built with 20 giant glue-laminated timber beams, this facility is the world's first professional sports franchise, making a solid statement for sustainable building practices in sports infrastructure. 2️⃣ Focus on Performance and Wellness: The design process, which involved a deep understanding of the team's travel and performance needs, led to a facility focused on recovery, natural light, and connection to nature. The mass timber structure lowers the carbon footprint and enhances athlete performance by creating a stress-reducing environment. 3️⃣ Integration with Nature and Community: Moving away from their 30-year-old "fortress of solitude," the Spurs' new centre in northwest San Antonio offers outdoor dining areas, recovery gardens, and dedicated outdoor training spaces. It's a space that values health, human performance, and environmental sustainability. 🌞 Sustainability at Its Core: 🔸 The choice of mass timber, coupled with on-site solar energy production, positions the centre as a net-zero facility. 🔸 This architectural wonder reflects the region's vernacular and connects players and staff with the outdoor environment, enhancing their overall well-being. 🏗️ Setting a New Benchmark: The Victory Capital Performance Center is not just a milestone for the Spurs or the NBA but for the entire Texas construction industry. It represents a shift towards environmentally responsible and innovative building practices in sports. 🔗 To explore more about the Spurs' new facility and its architectural and environmental significance, https://lnkd.in/gNBV5fcJ ❓ #questionforgroup: How can sustainable architecture principles be further incorporated into sports facilities worldwide? Talk about thinking outside the box “batter’s box” 🙂. What a brilliant idea converting an abandoned baseball stadium into housing. There are a lot of abandoned buildings in most major cities. The city should be incentivizing developers to develop these properties, keeping their original glory instead of tearing them down and building more glass monstrosities.
We spent $1 on an abandoned baseball stadium, and $14 million to convert it into luxury apartments—take a look inside

I’m all about seeing local brands come up. Driving down Garnet yesterday and seeing Sand Cloud setting up shop on the corner of Garnet and Cass is major. I remember seeing their product in skate and surf shops for years. IG’s algos would follow me around with products of theirs and they just seemed to know what they were doing. I was right alongside Stance as they built their following and leveraged it into 18 retail stores. Seeing Melin blow up out of San Diego the last few years has been dope. Knockaround been in these streets for years and they did it locally first. These brands all had something in common. Yes, they were started in SoCal but in my eyes, they’re all San Diegoish brands. They all took products that had been around forever but they thought outside the box, innovated, and built brands through strategic collabs and/or exceptional premium product with a nod to the skate/surf culture. Sand Cloud started on the beaches of San Diego with a beach towel. To see the ascension to Sand Cloud retail stores is pretty awesome. I know I’ll be one of the first customers in that store when they open. You gotta support local… especially with a company that gives back 10% of their profits to marine conservation. They’re trying to protect and preserve the beaches around the world and that is dope. Props to Sand Cloud. Props to Stance. Props to Melin. Props to Knockaround. Props to Aloha Collection. Props to Murf Elextric Bikes. Props to anybody putting in work to build brands out of SD/OC. It’s a tall task when rent is crazy high but y’all are smashin and I’ll stay loyal as long as y’all keep it 💯. Always gotta support local and shop small. If I missed any local businesses out of SD/OC, please drop in the comments. #smallbusiness #entrepreneurship #sandiego #encinitas #sanclemente #OC

Forsyth County, Georgia, is experiencing significant development across various sectors, particularly in luxury and mixed-use developments. Notable among these is “The Gathering at South Forsyth,” a proposed $2 billion, 100-acre development that aims to provide a blend of retail, office, community, and residential spaces. This ambitious project is designed to transform the area into a world-class entertainment destination and includes plans for an 18,500-seat arena which could potentially attract an NHL franchise [oai_citation:1,Renderings: Clear vision for $2B, Forsyth County mixed-use utopia emerges | Urbanize Atlanta](https://lnkd.in/eSWHr-86). Another major development is the Davidson-Forsyth mixed-use project, spanning 450 acres between Peachtree Parkway and Old Atlanta Road. This project came into existence after an agreement to repurpose land previously used for mining, now slated for a development featuring retail, office, and residential spaces [oai_citation:2,Forsyth County News: Here’s The Latest On Davidson-Forsyth, 450-Acre Mixed-Use Development - NELSON Worldwide](https://lnkd.in/eY5ysDaG). Additionally, the Coal Mountain Town Center is set to break ground, introducing a large-scale, master-planned community with more than 700 housing units, alongside retail and office spaces. This development is designed to enhance the community connectivity and green spaces, echoing the broader trend of creating vibrant, mixed-use environments in the area [oai_citation:3,Made-from-scratch town Coal Mountain poised to break ground | Urbanize Atlanta](https://lnkd.in/eR8pmuuR). WaterRower is buying CITYROW. The deal consolidates WATERROWER’s manufacturing and distribution strengths with its counterpart’s tech and content capabilities. Of note, rival Hydrow, Inc. explored acquiring CITYROW before a deal fell through. Founded in 1988, WaterRower first collaborated with CITYROW in 2014, outfitting its boutique studios. Entering connected fitness, it co-produced the brand’s home rower before supplying gamified rowing upstart Ergatta. Despite building a hybrid ecosystem of at-home rowers and boutique studios, the post-COVID landscape proved difficult to navigate for CITYROW, even after raising $12M in 2021. To prove their worth, connected equipment makers must deliver financial and fitness results. From partnerships and integrations to acquisitions and closing up shop, all options are on the table.

Recently there was story published in Crain's Detroit Business about a new National Football League (NFL) training facility and corporate headquarters that I had planned at Herman Kiefer. I was encouraged to discuss it because my plan is a concept that contemplates #community buy-in, on the front end. Last week I received a call from a local reporter. It was about a plan that I had created that shows a state of the art NFL training facility could fit at the old Herman Kiefer Hospital site. In fact Herman Kiefer would be an ideal location for an NFL Franchise. It would benefit from a lucrative naming rights deal given the sites proximity to the Lodge Freeway and downtown Detroit, and the number of cars and eyeballs that pass it every day. If the Lions choose to move their training facility from Allen Park I proved Herman Kiefer would be an ideal site. The economic and social implications of an NFL franchise locating in Detroit could be incredible for the city and its residents if executed properly. I graduated from the University of Detroit School of Architecture in 1995. I have studied the history of this great city, and have seen firsthand the adverse impacts that have occurred when large corporate and business entities turn their backs on Detroit. Conversely I have seen the immense benefits to residents and the community when these same organizations commit to our city! I was working in order to show that a plan in Detroit was possible and potentially lucrative. Having spent a good portion of my professional career as an architect in Washington DC I understand and have seen the pitfalls that can come with urban development, particularly to the disenfranchised. In order to assure that the HK plan avoid the potential harm to the neighbors and community I included $100 million be set aside for community benefits to the neighborhood. I was at the table and watched as the Detroit Pistons did much the same thing. In addition to other ideas a fund could be created so the value created by the Lions relocation full time to Detroit can be shared by the community, and more importantly, the people who have been residents of the Virginia Park neighborhood for many many years. Additionally, I know that the development of any such plan requires an extremely elevated level of sensitivity and respect while addressing communities needs and desires in the development process, and that my suggested fund could begin to address these issues. I believe we should be students of history and solve this problem in a way that is good for Detroit, good for the NFL and Lions, and most importantly good for the residents and community members of the neighborhood. If we manifest this plan into existence it will be a win win win!! My plan is attached.
