Memorable week in Taipei! 🌸 Last week I was part of the Czech political and trade delegation to Taiwan. Taiwan, often called the "Silicon Island," indeed demonstrated its reputation as a global technology hub and semiconductor superpower. The collaboration between the #Czech #Republic and #Taiwan holds great potential. Therefore, I am pleased that I could present CzechInvest services and the business climate of the Czech Republic to tens of Taiwanese companies at the Czech Republic Investment Opportunities Seminar. Our delegation also had the chance to visit Taiwan's most recognised institutions, namely: 🌐 Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)(工業技術研究院, 工研院) a crucial player in advancing various fields of technology, including information and communication technology (ICT), electronics, materials science, and engineering. 🔬 National Applied Research Laboratories, NARLabs: a major research organization in Taiwan. It operates as a system of national research laboratories, each specializing in different scientific and technological domains. 🧑🏻🔬 TSRI (Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute): a unique provider of semiconductor verification services from device to circuit and system integration, and it establishes an open platform for semiconductor manufacturing. and many others… A highlight of our mission was definitely #Semicon #Taiwan 2023 where I represented CzechInvest and I had the opportunity to join several networking sessions with dozens of international companies. Besides that, I should not forget to mention the 2023 EU-Taiwan Investment Partnership Forum on Semiconductor Clusters. The forum brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and visionaries, fostering collaboration to shape the future of semiconductors. The exchange of ideas and insights was truly remarkable. Expressing anticipation for MSIA's involvement in the NSSTF, Wong Siew Hai highlights the significance of this effort amidst an intensely competitive landscape. Recognizing the substantial contribution of the E&E sector to Malaysia's economy and its pivotal role in the global supply chain, he stresses the imperative for collaborative endeavors to maximize Malaysia's potential in this industry. A powerful opening panel discussion at the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association SME Conference today, on the topic of Rising to the Innovation Challenge: Strategies for SMEs to Compete Globally. Masterfully moderated by Solomon Lorthu of Motorola Solutions, it was an enthralling conversation with panelists Johnson Chiang of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)(工業技術研究院, 工研院) Taiwan, Ang Wee Seng of the Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA), Inv. Ts. Bok Eng Cheah of the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS) and Tatiana Didlier of The World Bank. It was inspiring to hear the Taiwan story, why they feel it's a good idea for SMEs to go into semicon design; how they as an industry grew, step by step, from 1969 when the first semicon company, Texas Instruments, set up in Taiwan. Malaysia's venture into semicon was with Intel Corporation back in 1972, only 3 years gap from Taiwan's back then, but today the maturity and strength of our local industries are drastically different. A glaring difference that stood out was how SMEs are IP-rich, inventors and innovators there, while here we tend to think of SMEs as the pakciks and makciks who are the B40s of business. One big takeaway for me was the conversation around the building of an innovation culture - how we need to learn how to recognise talent - not just adopters who are compliant, but inventors, creators and innovators - and nurture them, giving them the environment, ecosystem and space to grow and flourish. Too often we get into the trap of pitching Research & Development (R&D) against Commercialisation & Innovation (C&I), as if these are mutually exclusive things that compete with each other in terms of importance; when actually they are both equal parts of growth. Amkor's largest semiconductor factory in the world in Bac Ninh officially came into operation On October 11, 2023, a significant event took place at Yen Phong II-C Industrial Park: Amkor Corporation held the inauguration ceremony for Amkor Technology Vietnam Factory. This is not only the largest semiconductor factory of Amkor Corporation in the world but also a crucial step in developing the semiconductor ecosystem in Vietnam. Ms. Susan Y.Kim, Vice President of Amkor Corporation, affirmed that the development of the factory in Bac Ninh is part of the corporation’s business strategy. The new factory will become an important base, a pillar in the sustainable development network in the semiconductor field of Amkor Corporation globally. With support from the Vietnamese Government and Bac Ninh province, along with active cooperation from related organizations and units, Amkor’s factory in Bac Ninh promises to develop strongly, creating more jobs for workers and contributing to the overall growth of the region. This new factory not only benefits Amkor Corporation but also significantly contributes to the development of Bac Ninh province and Vietnam. In a significant move aimed at strengthening Europe's semiconductor industry and reducing its reliance on third-country suppliers, the European Committee of the Regions, in collaboration with the Free State of Saxony, has launched the European Semiconductor Regions Alliance (ESRA). This political network comprises 27 regions from 12 European Union Member States and is dedicated to enhancing Europe's capacity in semiconductor and microelectronics production. The initiative comes in response to the global semiconductor shortage, which highlighted the vulnerabilities in Europe's supply chain. Currently holding just a 10% share of the global semiconductor market, the EU aims to increase its presence and competitiveness, especially in the face of international trade challenges. ESRA's objectives include improving the legal framework, facilitating public and private investments, promoting knowledge sharing, and developing robust value chains. The alliance also calls for long-term funding in the EU's Multiannual Financial Framework to bolster semiconductor production, support for the European Chips Act, and sustainable production within the European Green Deal framework. By fostering collaboration, research, and innovation, ESRA aims to make Europe a key player in the global semiconductor landscape, aligning with the European Commission's goal to increase Europe's market share in chip manufacturing. The launch of ESRA signifies a pivotal step in securing Europe's economic and digital sovereignty, ensuring a reliable supply chain, and bolstering the semiconductor industry across the continent.
