They recently introduced passport pre-clearance, which makes quick business trips to places like Boston and Chicago almost effortless. Nieuport Aviation, the owners of the Billy Bishop terminal, have also started to add visual art installations and live music to the airport to give visitors a taste of what’s in store for them in Toronto. They’ve also made great strides improving the pick-up and drop-off in front of the terminal for shuttle buses, taxis, and family chauffeurs. Very soon, we will need to grapple with the future of Billy Bishop Airport. New federal aviation rules mean that adjustments will need to be made for planes to continue landing. To make these critical investments, the airport needs certainty that it will be able to continue operating its great service. For instance, it’s currently limited in the types of planes it can land. Imagine if instead of the outdated turboprop planes, it could accommodate modern aircraft that are greener and quieter. This would dramatically improve sustainability and livability near the airport while enhancing a key asset of our local visitor economy.” Millions of people, including roughly 80% of voting Torontonians, want this Airport to not just survive, but to thrive. London City Airport (LCY) is appealing the decision by local council, Newham Council, to reject the airport’s planning application to increase passenger numbers and amend its opening hours. In a UK airport first, the application proposed a commitment that only quieter, cleaner, new generation aircraft would be allowed to fly in any extended periods. The proposals would created 4,500 additional jobs across London, contribute an additional £702 million in Gross Value Added to London’s economy and enhance connectivity and passenger choice by enabling airlines to serve new routes. Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) has seen a 3.5% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers for 2023/24 across its network of 11 airports bringing the total number of passengers to almost 1.5 million. At Inverness, passenger numbers rose by 5.6% to 792,150. Wick John O’Groats airport, figures were up by 22.2% to 11,224 passengers, with increases of over 15% at Campbeltown and 7.9% at Islay bringing total figures to 7,734 and 29,919 respectively. Increases were also recorded at Kirkwall, Stornoway, Sumburgh and Tiree. Airports showing a decrease included Barra, Benbecula and Dundee. Paul Kelsall, HIAL’s CEO, said: “I’m encouraged that despite the challenging economic climate we have continued to build on the strong passenger figures of 2022/2023, which remain on track for a steady return to pre-pandemic levels. “We have invested to maintain our infrastructure and ensure the longevity of our airports for years to come. This includes a £5m project to upgrade the two runways at Islay and £9m in new energy efficient runway lighting at Inverness and Kirkwall airports. This week the Southampton International Airport Limited's extended runway opened on time and under budget. An achievement many others should take note of....but that is not what this post is about. The extended runway brings several benefits to both Southampton and Portsmouth. Some of the key advantages include: Economic growth: The runway extension is expected to generate an additional 2.8% of economic growth in the Solent LEP area by 2027. This is equivalent to £300 million in additional gross value added (GVA). Job creation: The airport estimates that the extension will create 1,500 new jobs in the region. This includes direct jobs at the airport, as well as indirect jobs in the supply chain and tourism industry. Improved regional connectivity: The longer runway allows the airport to attract new airlines and routes, enhancing regional connectivity and supporting economic success. This will give passengers from the region more choice of destinations and make it easier to travel to and from the area. Increased passenger capacity: The runway extension is expected to boost the airport's passenger capacity from 200,000 in 2021 to 3 million passengers per year This increase in capacity will help the airport recover from the impact of the pandemic and the collapse of Flybe. Attraction of new airlines: The extended runway enables the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, such as those operated by Ryanair and EasyJet, making it more economically viable for these airlines to operate from Southampton Airport Support for local businesses: The increased connectivity and passenger capacity will benefit local businesses in Southampton and Portsmouth, as more visitors will be attracted to the region. Strengthening the regional economy: The airport's growth is expected to contribute more than £160 million each year to the regional economy Reduced road traffic: The runway extension is expected to reduce road traffic in the region by 200,000 journeys per year. This is because passengers will be able to fly from Southampton instead of driving to London airports. Improved air quality: The runway extension is expected to improve air quality in the region by reducing emissions from road traffic. Overall, the extended runway at Southampton Airport is expected to create jobs, boost economic growth, and improve air quality. That can't be a bad thing, right!
