They are all proud Minnesotans and while you didn’t have to be born in Minnesota like those celebrities to be the next NBC Sports Next Market Sales Manager in Minnesota, you do have to live there. And yes, it’s true, it’s not perfect…average snowfall depth in Minneapolis, MN is around 50 inches a year. Did you know the Twin Cities average about 72 days a year where the temperature doesn’t get above 32 degrees? Well the candidate who applies for this role better know it. Being located in the Minneapolis area, the SportsEngine office will give you a chance to soak up some in person team culture as well your normal interactions with our remote sales manager positions all across the globe via Teams meetings. You get the best of both worlds. Success in this market will come with many eyebrows raised across the company, will you be the one to raise the tide in the land of 10,000 lakes? (Please don’t question the fact there are indeed no tides in lakes, that line was too good to omit) This role needs someone who is not only relentless, but someone who can quickly earn trust and connect with operators who use our technology and depend on our products to run their business. Many of the clients here use our tee sheet/point of sale technology in someway so you will constantly teeter on the fence of playing tech support and sales person. That takes skill and a supreme level of discipline to not fall down on either side and become a one trick pony. 💡B2B Sports GTM Tip Target the end user of your product for discovery meetings. There are differing points of view on this. I recommend targeting the person you’re most likely to work with once they purchase tickets 🎟️ assuming they have budget authority. The reason for that caveat is sometimes we will work with an admin that distributes tickets but we want to work with person that sets the strategy of how tickets get used. Throughout my career I’ve heard: “Go straight to the top” “Just get in to the company” “Schmooze the gatekeeper” All can have some success (except the gatekeeper one lol) but I’ve seen the most success targeting a specific persona that our team will work most closely with post sale. Once you’re in the sales process you will likely work with a number of people within the org because buying and decision making committees are growing. The President or CFO may give final sign off and I typically start by targeting a Head of Sales or CMO type role and work with/through them to gain budget approval to move forward with a purchase. Each company is different and their use case will differ but based on employee count and industry you can typically narrow it down to a handful of personas to target. 💡B2B Sports Sales & Marketing Tip Fish where the fish are🐠 And no that’s not a pun for the Marlins lol…big week for us though ⚾️ I listened to a podcast this week and the Head of Sales for a company was promoting an intent data provider they partnered with to identify companies that were showing intent signals in their product. They did a test and previously they targeted every company in their total addressable market and saw a 1% success rate booking meetings. When using the intent data provider they only targeted the 1% of companies showing intent signals and saw exponentially greater success with this approach. By no means is this a silver bullet but the goal is to get to the prospect before they are in the decision making phase. If you’re not in the initial list of companies they’re sourcing the likelihood of success is very low. If your company does not have the budget and resources to partner with an intent data provider you should still identify signals that a prospect make be in market for your product. For us in sports sales some signals may include: - Celebrating a milestone anniversary. It might make sense for them to do an employee outing to celebrate. - Scaling their sales team. New business is important to them so using sports tickets to bring prospects to games might make sense. - Hosting a convention or trade show in your city. They will need to provide entertainment for attendees and a game might make sense if schedules align. Sales is both an art and a science and this where the two intersect. Try something new and see what works. Think about what companies recently purchased from you. Were there any signals that you could use to target new prospects earlier in their buying journey? 🏎️ This is how I explain my Fractional CMO job to my mother 😅 -𝗠𝗲: Imagine someone wants to enter a car race championship. They don't have the money or resources of the big teams. They could buy a cheap car, but it wouldn't be good enough to win. They'd also have to maintain the car themselves and spend a lot to keep it up-to-date with new technology. That would eat up time, money, and energy - things that could be spent elsewhere. Or, they could go another route: renting a car only for the races. This way, they can get a more powerful, up-to-date car, ready to compete at a high level, without the ongoing maintenance costs. This is just like a Fractional CMO for a business. Instead of hiring a full-time marketing leader which can be costly, a company can hire a Fractional CMO for specific projects or periods when they need strategic marketing leadership. The Fractional CMO brings experience and expertise, guiding marketing efforts to match the company's goals. One of the biggest opportunities with sports teams for ticket sales and revenue growth is in B2B Sales and aligning those efforts with strong B2B Marketing. Did you know that despite being primarily a single-product company, Red Bull generates over $10 billion in revenue? Here are a few powerful lessons from Red Bull that can be applied to B2B marketing: #aGo Narrow: Red Bull’s market perception is synonymous with extreme adventure and boundless energy. This isn’t accidental. They invested heavily in extreme sports sponsorships—skydiving, snowboarding, mountain biking—and even acquired and rebuilt an F1 team for just $1, eventually winning 6 championships in the last decade.
