Elite high schools are the new model for diversity without affirmative action What if there was a plan that colleges and universities could adopt that could improve admissions, create stronger classes and increase diversity, all at the same time? Impossible, many admissions officers might say, especially in the wake of last summer’s landmark affirmative action case. And yet, this month, the Supreme Court left in place the admissions standards at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia that a lower court deemed constitutional. This provides a win for advocates of excellence and diversity, as well as a roadmap the rest of the country can follow. For context, there are highly sought-after public schools in most major metro areas — such as Thomas Jefferson or the Boston Latin School — that are pipelines to the Ivy League. Often, they are the only schools where white, upper-class families meaningfully participate in public education. They require an application to gain admission, and unlike most public schools, they are not open to all students. Few are diverse. The 1st Circuit stated this plainly, “There is nothing constitutionally impermissible about a school district including racial diversity as a consideration and goal in the enactment of a facially neutral plan.”

Advanced courses can help students prepare for college and career success, but not all students have equal access to them. At a recent gathering focused on pluralism, academics, nonprofit leaders and college administrators assessed the state of campus discourse and spotlight steps to improve it. “I’m optimistic,” John Tomasi, president of Heterodox Academy, said last weekend during a conversation on Nantucket island on pluralism in higher education. He described the “state of play in higher education” as being “wildly misunderstood,” with many embracing a “battlefield view” (forcing a binary choice between "truth or social justice") that often results in “suffering, anger, cancellations.” John Jones, president at Dickinson College after a long career as a federal judge, said the liberal arts institution in Pennsylvania finds itself having to “do some deprogramming” of students who’ve been raised in a “road rage” society, where many have developed a “this or that” mentality. Perhaps the civil discourse crisis on college campuses closely mirrors the one society as a whole is grappling with. The volatility on American college campuses this year is unprecedented. 1. There are ongoing campus protests about the Israel-Hamas conflict. 2. We're heading into a heated election season. The constant barrage of issues can be overwhelming. → Campus disruptions from protests. → Angry outreach from donors. → Balancing free speech with maintaining order. That's why leaders in the higher ed space must prioritize self-care right now. Without a calm and centered approach, effective decision-making is impossible. Here's how our team is grounding ourselves and our clients. 1. Double Down on the Mission → Our institution's mission is to teach students how to think, not what to think. → Reaffirm our institution's values, especially now. → Set boundaries against hate speech and violence. → Support students' rights to voice their concerns. 2. Foster Civil Discourse → Proactively seek dialogue among students with differing views. → Encourage higher ed leaders faculty to model this behavior too. → Teach students to navigate uncertainty and complexity with empathy. 3. Communicate Effectively → Stay true to the mission and promote civil discourse. → Manage stakeholder expectations while maintaining our institution's integrity. → This approach helps us present a unified strategy and gain broader buy-in By staying focused on our mission and fostering open dialogue, we CAN navigate these challenging times with clarity and purpose.

“The fact is, the vast majority of young people go through school without a sense of purpose. Our school system does not foster it. The majority of schools and districts remain compliance-focused and attend narrowly to the flawed set of outcomes represented by our state’s accountability system, like test scores, attendance rates, suspensions, etc.” Roman Stearns thanks for sharing your story, the interaction with your son and his friend, your experience within Cajon, and your commentary about what is missing in schools. I often find that when parents experience these moments with their kids, they realize, in a new and more vivid way, how important early exposure to the world of work is and how important it is for kids to have meaningful conversations with caring adults about their futures. It’s a reminder of how learning about careers, by using job titles and student interests, provides broad exposure for the types of real opportunities that are available to kids, especially those who have little exposure to the world of work. As you rightly share- much of the credit goes to Dave Miyashiro and a board with as much foresight to understand such a gap exists in our schools.
