Sankofa Sol's collaboration is built on the idea that our own unique perspectives help us understand things better. We believe that when we explore something, the people who know it well can explain its meaning better. So, we're using our experiences as Black women, mothers, caregivers, educators, and researchers. In 2022, the Rozsa Foundation received feedback from our community suggesting that as a private foundation, we could play a significant role in advocating for increased government support for the arts sector. This resonated with our values and vision, leading us to allocate more resources to arts advocacy. We've been active in advocacy at all levels of government, from local to federal. We've joined initiatives like the Nonprofit Vote and the Canadian Arts Coalition, and we've invested in our own knowledge through professional development programs. Recently, there have been positive steps in Alberta, with the government announcing increases in funding for the arts. This is encouraging news. Moving forward, we plan to stay connected with relevant government ministries and continue advocating for the arts sector. From the importance of economic prosperity within historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to tackling the urgent problem of homelessness, our discussions spanned a wide array of topics, each with the potential to drive significant change. Key Highlights: - Community Engagement: The session began with warm greetings and a collective enthusiasm for making a positive impact. Our speakers emphasized the importance of community involvement and the power of collective action. - Economic Prosperity and HBCUs: To bolster economic development and innovation through HBCUs, we delved into legislative efforts, specifically the "HBCU Innovation and Economic Prosperity Planning Districts Act" (SB 235). - Addressing Unemployment and Homelessness: The talks highlighted statistics on unemployment and homelessness, particularly among Black families, and discussed strategies for advocacy and support. - Income Levels and Educational Resources: Discussions also covered disparities in income levels across different races and the need for accessible educational resources, including teaching Black history amid restrictive laws. - Community Surveys and Feedback: Attendees were encouraged to participate in surveys to provide valuable feedback, ensuring the talks remained relevant and impactful. - Networking and Collaboration Opportunities: The session served as a platform for networking, with participants sharing contact information and resources to foster collaboration towards addressing homelessness, economic disparities, and more. - Call to Action: The meeting concluded with a call to action, urging participants to use their platforms and voices to advocate for change and engage in initiatives to improve community well-being. When we disengage from the political process, we are essentially surrendering our power and allowing others to make decisions on our behalf. This results in policies that often fail to address our unique needs, concerns, and aspirations. 🔎 By voting, attending community meetings, joining grassroots organizations, and voicing our opinions, we can directly impact the decisions and policies that affect us. We must demand accountability from our elected officials and ensure that they are representing our best interests. ✊🏾 It is very important to understand that our voices matter, and they deserve to be heard. Civic engagement gives us the platform to stand up, effect change, and pave the way for a brighter future not only for ourselves but for generations to come. 🌟 Honoring Legacies During Black History Month: Taking Action on Racial Disparities in Estate Planning 🌟 As we reflect on Black History Month, a stark reality demands our attention: the racial estate planning gap. In recent years, the conversation around wealth equity has gained some momentum, shedding light on various dimensions of financial disparities across racial lines. Yet, the critical issue of equity within estate planning remains in the shadows. Data on estate planning show that only around 25% of adults who identify as people of color have an active will, while about 50% of white Americans have one. This gap is not just a matter of legal documentation; it's about protecting the financial futures and legacies in communities of color. Without action, this estate planning gap perpetuates the historical inequities that have long undercut wealth accumulation and transfer in communities of color. Many families within Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Indigenous, and AAPI communities face an increased risk of involuntary land loss when they don’t have a proper estate plan in place. 🔗 Insights and Solutions I've delved deep into this issue, compiling causes, consequences, and potential solutions in a series of white papers. Closing this gap isn't just about creating equitable financial landscapes. It's a matter of honoring the histories and aspirations of all families, enabling them to pass on their cultural and financial legacies with dignity.
