📈 Investing in data collection and analysis boosts labour productivity and generates economic returns. 🔄 Data and traditional resources can be substitutes in consumption or production, as noted by William Nordhaus. 🌍 Governments, like private firms, will need to incorporate Big Data sources and methods into official statistics.

To wrap up our 25 years of research celebrations at Amárach we repeated questions from the European Values Survey back in 1999 to see how things have changed (or not) over the intervening quarter of a century. Some fascinating results comparing then with now: - work and family are less important but leisure and politics are more important - we are less happy than we were in the late 1990s - we are a little more trusting of people now than then - good manners is still the most important thing we can teach our children - we are less satisfied with the way democracy works in Ireland vs the past - the vast majority of Irish citizens are still proud to be Irish See the full 2023 results with 1999 comparisons here: https://lnkd.in/eVkZjfHE

🔍 5 keys to integrating deliberative mini-publics in local administration Deliberative mini-publics can become a tool that makes it easier for local governments to approach and connect with citizens to adopt decisions with greater social consensus within the framework of anticipatory, collaborative and open governance models. The big question we must answer is: How can we contribute to ensuring that they work and become effective and efficient instruments in local areas and contexts in which human and economic resource limitations are evident? 🎯 Know your audience Carefully select participants using stratified random sampling to ensure diverse representation. 📚 Empower through education Provide balanced and accessible information to participants. Expert presentations, question-and-answer sessions, and interactive learning experiences enable informed deliberation. 🗣️ Encourage genuine dialogue Create a structured but flexible environment for open discussion. Skilled facilitators are crucial to ensuring that all voices are heard and guiding the group toward constructive outcomes. 🤝Commit to action Demonstrate a clear link between mini-public recommendations and actual policy decisions. Monitoring is essential to maintain citizen confidence and enthusiasm. To this end, having a proven and validated accountability mechanism and implementing an effective communication strategy that allows a significant part of the population to know the work that is being carried out in this space and the results achieved are essential ingredients. 🔄 Bet on continuity Considering the institutionalization of mini-publics as a permanent characteristic of local governance, following innovative models such as that of Ostbelgien, can contribute to democracy being built by working on the challenges closest to society. The aforementioned Permanent Citizen Council in Ostbelgien, the Citizen Assemblies of Aachen, Newham and Gdańsk or the Citizen Juries of Turku and Kingston-Upon-Thames are some of the examples that demonstrate the effectiveness and interest of the implementation of deliberative mini-publics. in small and medium-sized European towns 🌍👥. Demonstrating how these innovative democratic processes 🗳️💡 are adapting to be able to work on local issues and improve citizen participation in decision-making 🤝🏛️ are topics that we will address in future publications 📚🔜. #DeliberativeDemocracy #CitizenCommitment #LocalGovernance #OpenGovernment #PublicInnovation #CollaborativeGovernance

The new #Bologna Process Implementation report has been recently published. It examines the latest policy commitments and their implementation in the European #HigherEducation Area (EHEA). We have asked our analysts to reply to the following questions : 🔵 What are the policy commitments of the EHEA and how far are the countries/educational systems in the process of implementing these commitments? 🔵 How have countries within the EHEA incorporated the six fundamental values agreed by the EHEA (academic #freedom, academic #integrity, institutional #autonomy, student and staff participation, and public responsibility for and of higher education) and defined these values in their own education systems and national legislations? 🔵 How are countries faring in terms of EHEA’s #social dimension policy? 🔵 How have higher education institutions supported the #Ukrainian academic community? Check our #EurydiceEU website to see what the answers are. You can also download a copy of the report through the same link. Enjoy the ride ! With many thanks to david crosier, Olga Davydovskaia, Anna Horvath, Daniela Kocanova, Snejina Nikolova and all the analysts who worked on this report. And Lili Szücs for her contribution too.

On December 10th, 2023, a new elected government came to office, headed by President Javier Milei. At a certain point of the electoral campaign, Mr. Milei vowed to close the Ministry of Science and Technology and shut down and privatize Argentina’s National Research Council (CONICET), the main government agency that fosters the development of science and technology in Argentina. More than two months after the new administration of President Milei took office, the following alarming facts are taking place: ● The budgets of CONICET and National Universities have been frozen at 2023 values which, given the current yearly inflation of more than 200%, puts our institutions in a critical situation ● Effective usage of research grants from our national funding agency have been suspended and laboratories are currently unable to use their funds. ● An important number of administrative employees from our institutes have been laid off, and the positions of many are at risk. ● Fellowships and early career positions are in an uncertain situation. ● Dialogue with the new authorities is difficult and ineffective. This critical situation has been reported by journals such as Science and Nature (https://lnkd.in/dPa88bnr; https://lnkd.in/dqGE9-UR); https://lnkd.in/dTRfNR2R). The directors of scientific institutions have organized a Network of Authorities of Science and Technology Institutes of Argentina (RAICYT, Red de Autoridades de Institutos de Ciencia y Tecnología). RAICYT is leading the negotiations to defend the scientific institutions in Argentina. We are kindly requesting scientists around the world who wish to send a support letter to do so to: [email protected] Argentina’s scientific community is in dire need of international help to prevent the dismantling of one of Latin America’s most prolific scientific systems
