The LIBRARIAN's DIARY | Revitalizing Learning Spaces: Enhancing Comfort, Safety, and Design Mon, 20 Nov 2023 - Among the #skills that a librarian needs, besides those that are often discussed, decoration and #design skills for #learning spaces and the arrangement of furniture and equipment are among the necessary skills for this #profession. Why… Learning spaces must always be comfortable and safe for users. The type of space that is to be opened and the type of furniture and equipment available must be aligned with the space theme. Additional features such as plug points, USB ports, phone charging hubs, and lighting must be appropriate to support the ambiance of the space. Any learning space in a #library/resource centre needs to be renewed or improved with new looks and decorations for a period to avoid boredom and to replace damaged and worn-out furniture and equipment. Librarians’ creativity with colleagues is required to make it successful. The project shown in the picture is the first draft proposal to improve a section of the collaborative space in room 365. This space is proposed to be given a new breath with the features shared above, including creating a ‘Bench Seater’ for a comfortable learning space and a better #experience for the users.

Today's marking session for the Architectural Communication unit was insightful. I was impressed by the quality of some of the models, particularly those that were demountable, featured interior furnishings, and were thoughtfully situated within their environment. It was noteworthy that architecture students showcased commendable interior elevations, surpassing some expectations when compared to interior design students. However, this is not to discount the efforts of the latter group. Highlighting the importance of effective architectural communication, it's imperative for young designers and architects to refine their pin-up presentations. Here are some constructive suggestions lecturers can share with students for improvement.: 1. Collaborative Critique: Encourage students to engage in peer criticism sessions to foster a supportive learning environment and exchange valuable feedback. 2. Emphasize Presentation: Stress the significance of presentation quality, as it can significantly influence the examiner's perception. Students should aim for polished presentations that showcase their work coherently and attractively. 3. Organizational Cohesion: Advise students to arrange their work in a logical order to ensure coherence and clarity in their presentations. By implementing these strategies, students can enhance the effectiveness of their pin-up presentations and elevate their architectural communication skills. My education at the European Higher School of Art and Design (EDS) was a transformative experience, teaching me that the spaces we inhabit daily are more than just structures. They embody a creative blend of colors, textures, and materials that inspire and create a sense of belonging. At EDS, I developed the skill to harmoniously combine these elements, a capability that wasn't innate but meticulously nurtured through a rigorous Interior Design program, leveraging 14 years of specialized educational expertise. The curriculum was heavily focused on practical skills, immersing students in hands-on learning experiences. It provided a comprehensive view of architecture through the lens of design, enabling me to undertake full-fledged projects, master modern software tools, and immerse myself in the interior design world. This included visits to design exhibitions, furniture manufacturing sites, networking with potential clients, collaborating with contractors, and securing initial commissions. Upon graduating from EDS, I was well-prepared to design spaces from scratch, whether for personal or commercial use, find clients independently, join design studios, and even achieve recognition early in my career. My education equipped me with a profound understanding of the current market's challenges and investment opportunities, paving the way for some of us to open our businesses or become leading voices in the design community, often returning as mentors or speakers at EDS. The program emphasized the practical application of design principles, ensuring I could create designs that resonated with contemporary trends and artistic sensibilities. I learned to creatively address compositional, stylistic, and ergonomic challenges, visualize my design projects both manually and digitally, and build professional relationships within the design environment. Understanding client psychology and fostering effective communication became second nature, enabling me to kickstart my portfolio and embark on my own design business journey. (Day 179) How can learning reignite your passion and overcome burnout as an interior designer? Learning is a continuous journey that should be included in our lives even after school. We tend to focus on our jobs and forget to become inspired by new works. Learning can include understanding new software, attending a seminar, or reading about new materials and design theories. We are always learning as we work, but it is important to set aside time once in a while to catch up on the newest updates in your industry to reignite our passion. I've noticed an increase in projects blurring the lines between the exterior and interior space. I'm hoping the trend continues. I've come across merely anecdotal evidence thus far, but I'd be willing to wager that education/work is more effective, productive, and rewarding in well-designed locations. "From the street, the single-storey structure appears deceptively massive. The glass and metal interior façade, which faces the courtyard, is lightweight and porous by contrast. This material duality runs throughout the project. The building’s imposing presence is softened by the sand-tinted raw concrete façade, which recalls the warm colour of the earth, and the gabled roof which evokes a residential feel. Its clean longitudinal volume responds to the site’s topography, while its neutral palette unifies the complex, allowing it to fit seamlessly into its context." #design #architecture #nature #education #france #projectmanagement #leadership
