I’m Bernie Still, District Advisor with First Command, and this is your career Tip of the Month
Transitioning service members often ask, “I’m not sure if I should get out of the military, what should I consider when making the decision?”
The decision to leave the military can be scary. Make sure you aren’t making a long-term decision based on short-term circumstances. Your decision to get out of the military should be values based.
First, answer these questions: What are you looking for in your next career? Can I attain what I’m looking for in the military? Last, what career will allow me to accomplish my career goals?
Things to think about when thinking about career values. Is it location? Flexibility? Maximal compensation? Opportunities for promotion? Maybe it’s a desire to stay in one location? Whatever it is, make sure you write it down and talk about it with a mentor or significant other. After your values are in focus you can start searching for careers that are aligned.
