3 Tips for a video shoot. 1. Create a script or at least an outline of what you want to say or show in the video. It helps you stay on track and ensures you cover all the necessary points. 2. Ensure your camera and lenses are clean and in working condition. Plan your lighting setup. Natural light is great, but invest in softbox lights for indoor shoots. 3. Clearly define roles for each team member, including director, camera operator, sound technician, etc.

During an audiovisual production, one of the things I value most, even above the quality of the delivery (because I sincerely believe this greatly influences the quality of the delivery), is well-being. The mental and physical well-being of a team during pre-production, shooting, and post-production is one of my main objectives on any set I work on. One of the things I’m most proud of is that, even though I haven't been part of thousands of recording sets, 99% of them (because we can't control everything) had the same positive atmosphere as the one in the photo. 🥰 Relaxed and pleasant sets, with happiness on everyone's faces, that led to very successful deliveries filled with professionalism. And when mixed with love and happiness, honestly? There's no way it can go wrong, and if it does, we find a way to fix it. When it comes to professional well-being, I think we could spend a lot of time talking about how important it is and how unfortunately it is often neglected by many companies, especially in the audiovisual industry. 😣

Video Industry Secrets they don’t want you to know… I’ll probably get in trouble for the last one. Here are some things to look out for on your next project: 1. Experience in the field will make or completely break a production. Anything could happen on set … from a cable ripping to a camera malfunctioning, an experienced production agency will have a backup for the backup. 2. If there’s not a streamlined onboarding process (quote, invoice, contract, and payment schedule), that’s usually a yellow flag. I’ve heard countless horror stories about not having a contract. Even if it’s an incredibly small project, contracts will set the expectations. 3. The cost breakdown of a video project varies tremendously between production companies. The three pricing structures you will see are hourly rates, day rates, and project rates. Project rates will give the most bang for your buck. Also, check to make sure you have detailed line items describing each service they are offering. 4. Most corporate productions (brand films, client testimonials, etc.) don’t require more than three people: Director/Camera Operator, 2nd Camera Operator / Assistant (sometimes called a grip), and Sound Engineer. The upsell in video world a lot of times are the crew. If there are line items for more than the 3 above, have your point of contact explain why you need the extra hands on deck. Sometimes it’s for good reason! Other times, they’re upselling. #videoproduction #corporatevideo

Media/Content Dude | I help your brand shine through sick commercials and organic content | Coffee Afficionado | Adventure Seeker
How did I go from being a videographer, running solo missions, to putting on productions with a tight-knit 6-8 crew members? Every time I needed something done that I couldn’t do, I hired another person. I repeated that process until most of the problems were solved. Then, did a few shoots and took INTENSE notes from each production. I spoke with every crew member THAT DAY about what they felt could have been improved during the day, what they liked, what didn’t work, how they felt, etc… Then called them a few days/weeks later, and had follow-up conversations. Same questions. Taking feedback, acting on it. If multiple people have something in common they had feedback on, I’d do it, and see how it’d impact the following production. Even if it cost me money out of my own pocket, it was worth the learning. And boy, I learned. Sometimes I overpaid for simple shit. Sometimes I underpaid. Sometimes I got terrible talent. Sometimes I got people that are now irreplaceable in my operation. And it starts with a conversation that sounds a little something like this: Me: “Hey, ‘Name’, I know you’ve done this thing for other people.. Here is my production and what we usually do… How do you think we could best fit you into that to solve this problem or desire I have? I’d like to try this and see if it works.. I’ve never done it before.”

Our video projects thrive thanks to our exceptional Video Production Manager, Brandon Kenney. His keen eye for detail seamlessly merges Hollywood flair with corporate messaging. Get to know Brandon below and discover more about his expertise. What is your title at PENDA? Video Production Manager Tell us a little about yourself and what you do... I am a cinematographer and video production manager at PENDA. I help to create and execute various client projects, contribute ideas and generate multifaceted content for marketing and flagship projects. I've always had a passion for cinematic storytelling and creative work and I love to see life from behind a lens. How does video production help clients tell their stories? Creating a video, especially with onsite filming, helps clients tell their stories because it offers a look into their operations and personalities. Everything from the people to the process to the product. My goal is to create a narrative perspective that encompasses more than just a video. I believe that filming on location adds more depth to what we create, making our visuals speak louder than words ever could. What is your favourite part of working with clients? I'm genuinely interested in what people are passionate about, so I love it when I get the opportunity to film with someone who enjoys showing us what they do or have created. It makes me feel wholesome to get an opportunity like that! What do you love about working with PENDA? I love working with the team behind the projects. Since I joined, I've had the opportunity to work closely with just about everyone on the team, and they really encourage creative ideas and trust my instincts which I couldn't ask for more. It's been a thrilling journey, and I believe our work truly reflects the energy and passion we put into it. Do you have an exciting moment or highlight memory from any of the shoots with PENDA? During one of my earliest shoots, we got rooftop access to capture a sunset timelapse in Toronto. Watching the city skyline transform from a downtown skyscraper was an unforgettable experience. It seems like such a simple memory, but it stands out because I felt like I was exactly where I wanted to be, doing exactly what I wanted to do as a career.
