I’ve worked with many different camera (and software) evangelists over the years. My last job was in-house, using Canons. For years, we used Reds at SJR.
It's been amazing to see how the technology has changed and how the image from these cameras is now so good. On a shoot this year, I was talking to the DP about Sony cameras, and he mentioned that the quality has gotten to the point where it almost doesn't matter which brand you choose. I'm sure many can tell the difference, and DPs will have their preferences, but as a producer, I tend to agree with the assessment.
I'll be attending NAB in NYC this October (if you’re coming, let’s meet up!). One of the events I'm most excited about is the HBO Camera Assessment Series. Besides image quality, I’m curious what makers are doing regarding size and weight.
In my current role, I’ve worked with a lot of non-actors (employees, company partners, thought leaders, etc.). They know what they are talking about but speaking into a giant camera (with a dozen pairs of eyes also staring at you) can be an intimidating thing. For many projects, especially content for social media, I’ve been trying to use cameras with a smaller footprint while employing a smaller crew. It makes a difference.
What do you think is the best camera and why?
