Lively discussion with the great Matthew Miller (note the impressive fluency of his political acronyms!) on Bloomberg News this week to discuss the EU parliamentary elections. I made the point that while the far right has made gains in these elections, the centre has held firm. We are not seeing a uniform trend across the 27 states and far right parties in Poland, Sweden and the Netherlands did not have a good day at the polls. I see the geopolitical risk premium being limited to France and some specific sectors. #PoliticalDiscussion #EUPartliamentaryElections #GeopoliticalRisk #FarRightPolitics #EuropeanPolitics #ElectionAnalysis #PoliticalTrends #CenterPolitics #EU27 #FrancePolitics

Like everyone in EU advocacy, my head is currently smoking with one question: How can I best engage with the new decision-makers in Brussels after the #EPElections on June 9? 🤯 Thank you to The Good Lobby for your webinar today, which gave some tangible steps ahead. The bottom line (no surprises here): Targeted comms is better than mass comms💡 Some key points 👇🏽 1️⃣ While 10-point manifestos for the next legislative cycle are useful, MEPs will be swamped with emails and their assistants won't have time to read it all. One key message tailored to the specific MEP is better. For instance, is there one concrete question MEPs can ask during new Commissioner-designate hearings? 2️⃣ While MEPs orient themselves in the first weeks and decide what committees to be involved in, civil society should use that time to do a thorough mapping. Who are the 20 key people for my specific topic? What drives them? What are their priorities and values? Once the committees are set up, complete the stakeholder list - and then do targeted introductions. 3️⃣ Barging into the room saying "My problem is very complex, and very big, so please act!" is unlikely to actually lead to the change wanted. The audience will shut off at the size of the problem, or say "well, if it's so complex, nobody will blame me if I can't figure out a solution". Instead, have a clear message with a tangible ask, that can actually lead to change. After all, wouldn't you say "yes" if someone offers you an easy thing to do with a massive impact? 4️⃣ Build media contacts! Engage with journalists and ask them to ask questions to the Commission during the regular press conferences - this goes a long way in putting your priorities on the agenda from several angles!
🇪🇺 What happens on the day after the Elections? 👥 Make sure to join us tomorrow at 13:00 CET to explore the opportunities for civil society can influence the next political cycle! 🔗 Registration: https://lnkd.in/dzUyd6uc Keep an eye out for The Good Lobby Elections Hub webpage to stay updated on upcoming events and find our toolkits and analysis ➡ https://lnkd.in/e96yFPkf #EUelections2024 #TGLelectionsHUB Alberto Alemanno Xavier Prats Monné Vinciane Patelou Nicholas Aiossa, Transparency International Giulia Neri
