This week, we had the honour of welcoming Professor Holger Hanselka, new President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, as part of his dialogue tour. Around 200 years ago, Joseph von Fraunhofer produced microscopes, magnifying glasses and astronomical telescopes by hand, in a laborious process and to a previously unrivaled level of quality. Now we have been presenting our modern approaches and concepts for digitized and networked optics production to the new Fraunhofer president. 😊 A particular focus of our current work is the creation of digital twins to optimize design and molding processes and increase product accuracy. Our work rests on three pillars: publicly funded research projects play an important role, as do bilateral collaborations with industrial partners. The third important pillar is our ACOP community, in which we conduct research on industry-relevant topics together with partners. Many thanks and best wishes for success, Professor Hanselka! #welcome #optics #digitalization #digitaltwin #molding

There is an exciting activity underway today and tomorrow at the National Science Foundation! I, along with my co-chairs James Warren (NIST), Benji Maruyama (AFRL), and Charles Yang (DOE), and guidance and support by Lisa E. Friedersdorf , am excited to host 80 participants across academia, industry, and over 15 Federal Agencies for the “Accelerating Materials Solutions to Meet National and Global Challenges” Workshop in support of the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) 2021 Strategic Plan. Over the first decade of the MGI, significant attention has been paid to the ever-increasing predictive power of materials models and their role in accelerating materials design. Now, profound changes are being realized to accelerate materials experimentation (both synthesis and characterization) through human-enhanced artificial intelligence and application of robotics (autonomous experimentation) that can test and verify these models. Building on a series of prior federal government-sponsored workshops, this workshop will focus on the current infrastructure landscape for accelerated materials experimentation within the context of the broader Materials Innovation Infrastructure (MII). Over the next two days, the community will: - Inventory the existing national Autonomous Materials Innovation Infrastructure (AMII). - Identify transformative opportunities and targets within the framing of National and Global Challenges and match the existing AMII capable of addressing these challenges. - Identify gaps in the AMII that must be filled to achieve the goals and targets. I am looking forward to robust engagement by our many participants! And helping enable accelerated materials discovery and translation through autonomous experimentation ensuring we remain at the forefront of materials research! #MGI

To support and encourage pupils interested in science and technology – this is the aim of "Jugend forscht", Germany's best-known competition for young scientists. 👧🇩🇪 Körber in Lüneburg has been organizing the regional competition for 20 years already! Every February, around 100 young researchers present their innovative projects to an interdisciplinary jury of experts. 🏅 This time, the winning projects dealt with topics such as "AI for autonomous detection of wolves", "Use of field-programmable gate arrays" and "Thermal imaging of bees". Organizing the competition is always a lot of work, but it's worth it: we promote science talent – and sometimes see some of the young talents return to us later. We wish everyone continued success in the next round of “Jugend forscht”! 👏🏼 Find out more about Körber Pharma here: https://lnkd.in/djHmnui #STEM #youngresearchers #youngscientists

In 2019, a group of colleagues and I launched the Photonics Online Meetup - an entirely free online conference. The first event was hybrid - connecting local viewing hubs with virtual streams of talks in a spoke-hub fashion. It has grown over the years, exploring a range of topics, and this year, we're back for a 4th edition (Nov 13-14). Through a dedicated effort from a large team, it is still free. This time, we're branching into applications of photonics in manufacturing, smart data-driven imaging, & biomedicine! But we're also planning a Hot Topics session so that everyone has a home! The post-deadline abstract submission due date is Aug 14! Yes, today! (But it is really short and easy. Afterall, we are also writing them and reviewing.) link: https://lnkd.in/gpwRyXCr Chairs: Tatevik Chalyan and Jana Nieder (and me!) Organizing committee: Fei Xia, Estibaliz Gómez de Mariscal, Gordon Zyla, Danielle Harper Founders: Orad Reshef, Igor Aharonovich, Sylvain Gigan, Rachel Grange, Mikhail Kats, and Riccardo Sapienza #science #virtualconference #photonics #smartdata #additivemanufacturing #biomedicalresearch #technology #optics #lasers #engineering #quantum #imaging #microscopy #machinelearnig
