Rotterdam World Gateway B.V. has announced that they will invest as the first European deep-sea terminal operator in shore-based power for all vessels. The first berths are expected to be equipped with shore-based power from 2026 onwards. That puts RWG ahead of European regulation, which stipulates that all container, passenger and cruise ships larger than 5,000gt in European ports must use shore-based power by 2030. The RWG terminal is already fully automated and CO2 neutral. Construction of shore-based power facilities means that vessels will also no longer emit particulates, nitrogen and CO2 when at berth. Learn more: https://ow.ly/xu6z50QHYrL Each vessel will carry up to 360 vehicles and 2,100 passengers - that’s up to 44% more vehicles and up to 75% more passengers than the retiring vessels. The new vessels will provide more capacity across the system and improve how we get our customers where they need to be. The design calls for engines capable of using bio and renewable fuels, and includes a battery-hybrid propulsion system that will allow for conversion to full battery-electric operation once shore-based recharging infrastructure becomes available. Today, we issued a Request for Supplier Qualification (RFSQ) for the New Major Vessels program. The RFSQ is available through the international shipbroker Clarksons, as well as on bcbid.gov.bc.ca. It will close on March 22, 2024. Qualified shipyards will then have the opportunity to take part in the Request for Proposal (RFP) process, currently expected to occur in the summer of 2024. “These vessels – green, efficient and standardized – represent the future of ferry travel in our province. I wonder why BCFS builds in batches instead of continuously. That would keep local industry busy, providing constant employment, providing the possibility of continuous improvement. When building in batches with several years between each batch none of those advantages are accrued. Typically experience shows that the first vessel of each batch requires massive rework at great unnecessary expense.

⚓ Maersk Signs Shore Power Supply Agreement with Port of Hamburg ✅ The Port of Hamburg is expanding its shore power supply capabilities and became the first European port to provide shore power to container ships earlier this year. Recently, the Hamburg Port Authority signed an agreement with Maersk to supply shore power to vessels at the Eurogate Container Terminal. MSC also entered into a similar agreement last year and finalized the official contract in June 2024. ✅ The port authority aims to achieve climate neutrality in all operations by 2040 and is installing shore power at the CTA and HafenCity cruise terminals. Additionally, the CTT and CTB container terminals will begin supplying shore power this year. ✅ The first trial operation was successfully conducted earlier this year with the CMA CGM Vasco de Gama vessel. Along the lines of the Green Deal and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy the Commission has just publicly started work on the TBER – the Transport Block Exemption Regulation, the first act of its kind (apart from Regulation 1370/2007, which applies to passenger transport), which would allow EU member states to award state aid for operations and investments related to commercial/cargo land transportation without the need of prior notification to and approval of the Commission. Particular emphasis is to be placed on, among others, interoperability and intermodality; in particular, as announced, the scope of the TBER is to also cover, to some extent, intermodal terminals and private sidings. While it will still take some time for the Commission to adopt the TBER and member states could also need extra time to put in place national laws providing for the relevant state aid programs, the TBER should definitely be followed closely by railway and intermodal transport undertakings and their business partners. They may also be interested in submitting their views in the upcoming TBER public consultations.

The convergence of interests between urban and rural actors of the #CoP and internal and external actors of the #CoE finds a common ground in #sustainability. The #sustainable infrastructure of #CIPMI sets a path and also marks an important scientific conversation, which we will discuss at #IAME2024.

ONRSR supports efforts to accelerate the implementation of the joint Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and GS1 initiative, Project iTRACE. ONRSR sees the project as a significant initiative in the provision of improved analytics and incident investigations as well as establishing a foundation for safety-relevant information exchange among operators. ONRSR is exploring additional roles in support of interoperability and harmonisation such as providing a national facilitation and coordination role to identify opportunities for reform of processes that will deliver both safety and productivity benefits.
