From September 27th to 29th, 2023, I had the privilege to actively engage in the 9th East African Health & Scientific Conference, hosted at the Kigali Convention Centre in Kigali, Rwanda.
The conference centred around the theme of "Challenges and Strategies for Preparedness and Response to Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases: Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic.".
In different sessions, I orally presented the research abstract about the Roles of Community Health Workers in Pandemic Preparedness: A case of COVID-19 in areas surrounding the Bwindi-Mgahinga Conservation Area in Uganda.
In our research study, we found out that community health workers played pivotal roles in the pandemic response despite several challenges they encountered. We recommended numerous steps which could be taken to effectively utilize CHW services to strengthen the pandemic preparedness in the East African Community, Africa and the world at large.
Events of this calibre serve as a convergence point for expert scientists, academics, policymakers, researchers, students, and other stakeholders, fostering collaboration and innovation to enhance international health coverage.
I appreciate the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Rwanda, the East African Health Research Commission and the East African Community for spearheading the successful organization additionally I commend all the participants in different capacities for their contribution towards the success of this event.
It was a fruitful learning and networking experience.
