William (Will) Woodworth is a survivor. Since his car accident in December, Will and his care team at Henrico, Parham & Retreat Doctors' Hospitals have been working tirelessly to help him return to his favorite place: the great outdoors. After Will was pulled from his burning truck by two passersby, he was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) at HCA Virginia Health System’s Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. There, our trauma experts diligently cared for his injuries. Will and his family are grateful for the doctors, nurses and therapists at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital's Level II Trauma Center. Transforming healthcare via consultancy to improve patient outcomes, improve patient safety, enhance the patient and staff experience, and increase efficiency through process improvement and enhanced interim leadership
Effective triage in the emergency department is crucial to keep patients safe and sorted for the best outcomes. The ability to accurately determine the initial acuity and expertly maximize care resources in the emergency department are vital. The trends that we see with the under-triage of special populations such as pediatric, geriatric, maternal, and trauma also speak to the need to ensure that an effective triage program is place. Check out the following article that I co-wrote with Margaret (Peggy) Grover MHA, BSN, RN, CPEN to learn more on what it takes to have a strong triage program for the emergency department or trauma center. https://bit.ly/44wldFV #networking #emergencymedicine #traumacare #emergencydepartment #emergency

Families are confused by palliative care because we (the collective we) keep referring to it as end-of-life care, and the messaging is 95% about planning for death instead of the quality of LIFE being lived. The quotable Shawshank Redemption rings loudly: "Get busy living, or get busy dying." The term palliative is not approachable for understanding... I'd love to see a rebrand to medically-complex care, or something to that effect. Painting all kids on the severe neurological impact spectrum as imminently dying, when many of them live long, high-quality lives does a disservice to their dignity and personhood. We must be careful with the intention and unintended impact of messaging if we want to build a better comprehensive approach to caring for medically complex children and their families. Care planning, considerations for advanced directives, succession planning, and financial planning are all very important considerations, but let's not lose focus of the terms LIVING and LIFE. #PediatricPalliativeCare #SoapboxoftheDay #QualityofLife
