I had the pleasure of attending a lecture this week by Dr EDWIN ISOTU EDEH on the significance of environmental preservation. During the session, I gained valuable insights on the topic, and I would like to share three crucial lessons that I learned.o Firstly, improper waste disposal can lead to contamination of both surface and underground water, which in turn can result in the spread of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and chronic kidney diseases. Given the rise of non-communicable diseases in our country, we must address our waste disposal systems to eliminate this menace. Secondly, improper waste disposal can also contribute to air pollution, which can adversely affect the quality of life of individuals living in such an environment and expose them to various health risks. Finally, it is essential to be mindful of how we dispose of our waste at all times to create a healthier and more sustainable environment. I would like to express my gratitude to Dr. Jonathan Dangana for facilitating this enlightening session.

World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5th to promote environmental awareness and conservation efforts. The primary objective of this day is to emphasise the significance of protecting our planet. Individuals are encouraged to take positive actions for the Earth, either independently or collaboratively. The key focus is on actively contributing towards creating a sustainable and healthier environment for all living beings. 🌎 International Mother Earth Day is a reminder of our collective responsibility to adopt sustainable practices that preserve our planet for future generations. At Round Table on Responsible Soy Association (RTRS), we are committed to this cause through our Responsible Soy Production Standard and its add-on for Responsible Corn Production, which provide clear guidelines for sustainable agriculture. 🌱 Today, we want to highlight how Principles 4 and 5 of our standard directly contribute to the health of our ecosystems. ✅ Principle 4, Environmental Responsibility, guides producers in implementing measures to mitigate social and environmental impacts, reduce pollution, and preserve critical areas such as native forests, riparian vegetation, natural wetlands and steep slopes. ✅ Similarly, Principle 5, Good agricultural practices, emphasizes the importance of maintaining and improving water and soil quality, preventing erosion, and minimizing the negative impacts of agrochemicals. These efforts align with Sustainable Development Goal 15 "Life on Land," reflecting RTRS's dedication to promoting sustainable cities and communities. The links between environmental health and human health, well being and equality are well known but many policy makers tend to ignore the evidence in favour of short term politics. This,article is spot on and worth reading - to quote 'The health of humans, animals and our environment – all woven together in a bond that is inextricable – is in peril' It goes on to say the causes (of the climate, biodiversity and pollution crisis) are multi sectoral, as are the impacts and so the response must be.
