The rise in student mental wellbeing needs and diagnoses can be attributed to various factors. Firstly, the increasing academic and societal pressures have placed immense stress on students, contributing to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Additionally, the stigma surrounding mental health has gradually decreased, leading to more students seeking help and being diagnosed with mental health conditions that may have gone unnoticed in the past. Furthermore, the prevalence of digital natives, who have grown up in a constantly connected digital environment, has introduced new challenges to mental wellbeing. The pervasive use of social media, cyberbullying, and the pressure to maintain a curated online presence have impacted the mental health of students, often leading to feelings of inadequacy, isolation, and anxiety. However, despite the increasing needs, one of the significant challenges is the limited availability of school psychologists and mental health professionals. The shortage of qualified professionals means that many students do not have access to the necessary support and counseling services within their educational institutions. This lack of resources exacerbates the mental health crisis among students, as they may struggle to receive timely and adequate care. In light of these challenges, it's essential for educational institutions and policymakers to prioritize the mental wellbeing of students by investing in mental health resources, increasing the number of school psychologists and counselors, and integrating mental health education and support services into the core of the educational system. By doing so, we can work towards creating a more supportive and nurturing environment for students to thrive academically and emotionally. #childrensmentalhealth #childrensmentalhealthmatters #childpsychology #schoolpsychologist #education #educationforall #studentwellbeing #urgentneed
Disappointing news during #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek as the Royal College of Psychiatrists has reported a 53% increase in referrals to Camhs in England across just the last three years. This comes as headteachers have been warning schools are already dealing with a "tsunami of pressures" affecting pupil wellbeing. Troubling, but not unexpected news. One of the things I’m actively trying to support schools with is incorporating a program of building strong mental health from the ground up. Mental health is not just about trying to sort out a problem when it arises, but incorporating strategies that are easy to implement and have a meaningful, positive impact on resilience, growth mindset and self-awareness. It’s not about always being happy, but having a strong enough relationship with oneself that if mental health is challenged, we are equipped to deal with it. I’m running some training with the ISA in June where we’ll be discussing how to do just this. Book onto the course if this is something you think your school and young people could benefit from.

Physician Leader & Public Health Advocate. Skilled Pediatrician & Speaker on Child Health. Clinical Expertise in Community-Based Autism & ADHD Care.
Professionals who provide critical services to children often have highly specialized skills but almost always paid less than their peers: -pediatricians -school nurses -K-12 educators AND: youth mental health professionals. News flash: Youth who are experiencing behavioral health crisis and ongoing mental health conditions struggle as they grow will be less likely to reach full educational, career, and economic potential if they don’t receive timely mental health services. That’s an amazing return on investment that we keep ignoring here in Massachusetts and nationally. “Clinicians who do home-based work are among the most skilled and need to be recognized for the difficult, mobile nature of their job. These professionals should be among the highest paid staff in our system, but are instead often at the bottom of the scale due to lagging reimbursement rates. We call on the administration and Legislature to prioritize investment in children’s behavioral health services, thereby enabling providers to build a pipeline to strengthen the workforce. Specifically, we call for immediate and substantial rate increases.” #youthmentalhealthcrisis #mapoli https://lnkd.in/ezVTYRvG

The Department of Health & Social Care has released statutory guidance for Discharge from Mental Health Inpatient Settings. Although trauma-informed care is specifically addressed only for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, the guidance generally follows trauma-informed principles. This includes promoting: - Individuals to be given choice and autonomy - Collaboration (i.e. to develop a crisis and safety plan) - Access to peer support https://lnkd.in/eQs9hCvK

"It's not uncommon for people to be put on several different medications – one of those medications is to mitigate the “side effect” of the other medications. Polypharmacy is a dangerous & harmful practice in medicine & psychiatry. When the right cocktail is reached, and they’re deemed “psychiatrically stabilized”, patients often describe the feeling as being put in a straight jacket. Of course, large percentage would just stop the medication as soon as they left our care. Noncompliance in psychiatry is the pink elephant in the room – why do people refuse to stay on their medications if they were largely benefitting from them?" #DoNoHarm #HumanRights #InformedConsent #VictimRights #HumanRights #DisabilityRights #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #Psychiatry #Hysterical #WomensRightsAreHumanRights Have to wonder, had we chosen 2 value #women long ago & not allowed #Psychatiry to be used as weapon to #silence women, what might our #MentalHealth & #Addictions treatment look like today? Perhaps a lot more like #trauma informed 'care' & a lot less like oppression, marginalization, #humanrights and #legal rights violations? A lot more #Recovery, a lot less #suicide? A lot better 4 both men & women? Because #Psychiatry, wanting to expand it's customer base no longer discriminates primarily against women. Throw #addiction & risk &/or fear of #violence into the mix and congratulations, I think we've pretty much achieved or surpassed equality, with females and males being major targets 4 #MentalHealth & #Addiction discrimination. Still a ways to go from race & ethnicity perspective though. For the record, the goal of #DiversityEquityAndInclusion should be to increase the #Privilege & #opportunities 4 #marginalized individuals & whatever categories we want to categorize humans based on. Unfortunately what we are seeing as a side-effect of well intentioned programs, laws & practises is greedy, selfish people & their evil influences. Leveraging both #DEI programs and hurt & angry humans, 2 turn hurt 2 anger into #Hate, in order to create more divisiveness amongst the masses who genuinely want to do good but now feel like obliged 2 'hate' anyone, any words, values that aren't perfectly aligned to the unwritten, unbeknownst to most of us so-called #acceptable rules de jour. Freedom is the right to believe anything one wants; it is not the right to force those beliefs on others, nor is it the right to speak in #hate and/or marginalize anyone else. But cancelling anyone, or any group of people bc they don't think, act, speak and believe exactly as 'they should' is exclusive, and it's dangerous. Because when we force anyone into the closet, isolating and/or cancelling them we force them to find community and belonging wherever they can. #Antisemitism, #Racism, #Homophobia #Misogony etc. never went away, it just got shoved into the back of the closet creating an opportunity for #Evil & #vile characters to swoop in & make a Hate based #PowerPlay.

Addiction and Behavioral Health Curricula Wizard 🧭 Coach for Women Building Careers of Purpose and Grounded in Wellness 💫 Writer, National Speaker, Researcher
I hear this over and over again from clinicians I talk with in the Behavioral Health and Primary Care space. This survey verified what they have been saying about what is driving the current Mental Health Crisis in our youth. It also gives insight into solutions. Here’s what survey respondents (1400 clinicians) said about their dissatisfaction with current resources*: “Rural areas around us have little to no resources.” “I work in an adult emergency room but children are brought in frequently for mental health issues … We have no resources to treat children here. The surrounding community has a lack of resources.” “The resources are only as good as the people delivering the services and affordability.” “There are so many kids and teens in need of quality therapy, and not enough providers.” “There is a shortage of people who can treat children, especially under age 10.” “Waitlists tend to be 6-12 months to get into services.” “Many schools don’t even have guidance counselors for students to go to talk to if needed. Some will have counselors only once a week.”
What’s driving the youth mental health crisis? We asked 1,400 clinicians.
