"Our role [as a funder] is to listen, to learn, and to provide partnership where helpful." – Pedro Arista, Hellman Foundation This excellent San Francisco Examiner article profiles local public-private partnership efforts, led by the Food as Medicine Collaborative, to expand access to healthy foods for low-income and minority communities. Next week the California State Assembly Committee on Health will consider a bill, introduced by Oakland Assemblymember Mia Bonta, to make medically supportive food and nutrition services a permanent benefit for Medi-Cal recipients. Today The Rockefeller Foundation announced an additional $80 million in investment to advance #FoodisMedicine programs in the US. Alongside this funding, we also launched a series of joint commitments in partnership with U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to accelerate the adoption of these programs in health systems. Our EVP Elizabeth Yee sat down to discuss this work at todays HHS FIM Summit with Secretary #XavierBecerra of the HHS, and other voices at Instacart, and Feeding America and to explore what it means to pave an equitable and nutritious future for Americans. So proud to be a part of bringing this work to life and thinking about what it means to scale it equitably! Director of Development @ Move For Hunger | Donor Relations, Strategic Planning, & Communication Strategies
2024 is off to an incredible start. Move For Hunger was 1 of 140 organizations selected to be a part of the “White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities”. Our initiative is to expand our fresh food program to 6 million pounds before 2030. The hardest thing to come to terms with is that when “we” (the Move For Hunger team) are doing our very best work, it’s because someone is literally living out their very worst. Food insecurity knows no race, gender, location, or any other preset circumstance. It can affect ANYONE. Do what you can to #raiseawareness, host a #fooddrive, or take part in any of our initiatives like #csrinitiatives or #teammoveforhunger to help us reach our goal. Together, we can feed families and stock shelves so no one goes to bed hungry. #endhunger #mobilize #supportnonprofits
The Biden-Harris Administration recently announced $1.7 billion in commitments as part of the White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities. A huge thank you to Food Forward Inc., Food Recovery Network, Caring For Others, Bigger Table, and Move For Hunger, along with dozens of other organizations, for your pledges to combat hunger and food insecurity over the next 6 years. We applaud your ongoing efforts to enhance access to nutritious food across the country. Check out further details here: https://lnkd.in/eJMMjkx6

Chief Healthcare Experience & Equity Officer, Thought Leader, Public Speaker | Enabling Healthcare Organizations to Achieve Business Excellence & Membership Growth | Award-Winning, Nationally Acclaimed Programs
A recent analysis published in JAMA Internal Medicine revealed that individuals experiencing food insecurity are at greater risk of dying prematurely and living a shorter life. Adults with very low food security were found to live 4.5 years less once they turned 50 compared to those with full food security. The researchers noted about half of the lost life expectancy could be attributed to cardiovascular disease and cancer and emphasized the impact of access to nutritious food on overall health outcomes. Providence Health Plan we are looking at many different ways to address the social determinants of health (SDOHs), one of those ways includes food insecurity. This directly ties into PHP’s Health For All initiative. We are partnering with the Oregon Food Bank, encouraging donations to other local food banks, and have a food insecurity pilot program. And lets all keep in mind that February is Heart Month, they can also note the impact of proper nutrition on cardiovascular health and encourage individuals to seek resources on heart-healthy eating from the American Heart Association . https://lnkd.in/gF4yEAZw

Impactful evaluation findings as well as supporting beneficiaries on how to increase access to food assistance programs for US eligible individuals/households. I am glad “Food is Medicine” programs are scaling up the social determinants of health and link to food security prevalence. This Feeding America project is a great step in the right direction as US populations still struggle with food insecurity even in this post-pandemic era. This study highlights how access to more nutritious foods can bolster the overall well-being of a community. As at October, recent USDA report shows foood insecurity affects more than 44 million people in the United States which increases the risk for diet-related diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure in the nation. More work to be done! #foodsecurity #usda #foodbanks
The GSCN Food as Medicine team is leading the national evaluation of a $14 million Feeding America project, funded by Elevance Health Foundation—the largest grant in the Foundation’s history. To understand the impact of this ambitious project, GSCN’s evaluators are bringing together surveys, interviews, electronic health records, and claims data from 21 different Feeding America food banks and health care partners. Up to 80% of health outcomes are influenced by non-clinical factors, such as access to nutritious food, reliable transportation, quality housing, and financial stability – meaning that most of our health is driven by things that happen outside of the doctor's office, according to Elevance Health. According to Principal Research Scientist Dr. Christopher Long, “GSCN is grateful for the opportunity to document the many ways food banks’ partnerships with health care providers are improving the health and wellbeing of the communities they serve. We look forward to supporting Feeding America and Elevance in telling the story of food banks’ central role in the Food Is Medicine movement.” https://lnkd.in/gEM8UT_h

Dignity is one of the most important things we should promote as a society but one of the least talked about. Dignity should not be dependent on your job or your security, it comes from being human. Let's talk about how to promote food dignity, especially for those facing food insecurity.
September is #HungerActionMonth, and we're excited to host Clancy Harrison MS, RDN, FAND from The Food Dignity® Movement next week for our September webinar! As a food equity advocate, registered dietitian, TEDx speaker, and international thought leader, Clancy challenges the way #FoodInsecurity is approached and discussed. Her mission: demolish the stigma around #FoodAccess. Clancy is joined by Food Rescue Hero's own Victoria D., registered dietician and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist, to discuss how we can grow the conversation around food access to both include healthful food options while maintaining food dignity & cultural relevance. Save your seat to tune into this FREE event: https://lnkd.in/g5p32a5E

Access is defined as “obtain, examine, or retrieve.” When we think about some of the key barriers to improving individual and population health, creating and ensuring access to needed clinical services is core to our work at the UnitedHealthcare Community & State Community Plan of Wisconsin and is foundational to the work that our providers, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and community partners do every day. However, when we broaden our lens on what drives positive health outcomes, 80% of health is driven by social drivers of health (SDoH). Stable and safe housing, nutritious food, transportation, and education are but a few of the SDoH inputs that when addressed, can have a dramatic impact on members meeting and exceeding their health goals. Late last year, we had the opportunity to learn more about how one of our Community Health Center partners were addressing SDoH barriers. NorthLakes Community Clinic, serving members and patients across 14 “Up North” counties, created a program where patients could receive two boxes of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) food shares per month, free of charge. The program started strong, but North Lakes was seeing a decrease in the number of people picking up their CSA boxes as the cost of fuel was creating a new barrier to access. Our conversations created a solution that could help participants in accessing the healthy produce found in their CSA boxes. To learn more about NorthLakes, their work and our approach to open access, please check out the latest blog post from NorthLakes Community health Worker Nate Roberts and UHC’s Director of Population Health and Quality improvement Trisha Houghton ! A huge thanks to Reba Rice and Nate Roberts at NorthLakes for their partnership and the amazing work they do to support their communities and population health.
