The landbank of Helios Nordic Energy AB, a Magnora ASA portfolio company reaches 10 GW in Sweden and 1 GW in Finland Throughout 2023, the land bank of Helios Nordic Energy grew threefold reaching 10 GW in February 2024. Helios has more than 8,200 MW of solar PV projects and more than 1,800 MW of BESS projects in Sweden. A closer look at the portfolio reveals a series of interesting trends. Firstly, the rapid portfolio growth has been achieved without significant additions in manpower. Rather, Helios's cost of land acquisition has come down. Helios has become the natural choice for landowners, in part because the company has proven its ability to find investors (compensation to landowners is mostly contingent on solar parks becoming operational). Secondly, Helios has emphasized diversification. The landbank with a balance between BESS and Solar PV, a balance between Swedish regions, land characteristics, and project maturity. The portfolio covers more than 150 projects and more than 200 land lease agreements of various sizes. This diversity serves to de-risk the portfolio. Thirdly, Helios is by far the largest developer in Sweden in terms of landbank, but even further ahead in sales and deliveries having sold 24 PV projects with a total capacity of almost 1 GW to top-tier energy companies such as German Commerz Real, Danish Nordic Solar, Norwegian Hafslund and Solgrid. In 2023, the team delivered five ready-to-build projects of approximately 170 MWp and targets a substantial increase in the year ahead. This sales-driven approach forces an emphasis on finding land and projects that can be built. Outside Sweden, Helios has succeeded in its expansion to Finland where Helios Nordic Energy Finland Oy has grown rapidly. Helios's net share of the Finish portfolio is currently above 1.1 GW with 565 MW of Solar PV and 600 MW of BESS projects. Additionally, they will cooperate for 1 GW of new solar and onshore wind projects under development in the country. “We expect to present our strategy and growth targets in the U.S. to the financial community in the first half of next year with the 2024-28 industrial plan. Matrix Renewables has signed a framework agreement with First Solar to procure 2.1 GW responsibly produced thin film modules. These modules, set to be delivered between 2024 and 2027, will fuel Matrix projects both in the United States and Spain and marks the renewable energy platform’s first order for First Solar ultra-low carbon photovoltaic (PV) technology. Commenting on the project, Matrix President, Luis Sabaté, said: “As a purpose-driven company, and as part of our supply chain strategy of partnering with technology market leaders, we are thrilled to be working with First Solar to supply our projects in the US market, and a number of our Spanish projects”. Across the US, Matrix owns more than 6 GW of projects in various stages of development across four different regions (CAISO, MISO, ERCOT and WECC) and continues to expand its pipeline and team to capitalize on the large demand for renewable energy in the US. Domeniile Salameh Renewables, a Constanta based landowner and renewable energy projects developer, received the grid connection approvals from Transelectrica for the development of a 220 MW solar park and 223 MW wind park in Constanta. This is the largest project of combined wind, solar and storage capacities in the country so far. The parks will be built in stages starting in 2026, and the value of the combined investment will exceed 500 million Euro. Dr. Nawaf Salameh, Chairman of the Domeniile Salameh Renewables stated: “Our large under-development ‘hybrid’ project of combined 450MW is part of a larger planned portfolio of mixed 1GW capacity under a five-year development plan, as we wish to contribute to Romania’s targets and ensure energy independence and security in South-Eastern Europe. Enspire Enerji, investment branch of Turkey-based Entek Elektrik, took over a 214 MW solar power project in Romania from Econergy for EUR 32.9 million. The investment is in an advanced stage. Turkish oil refiner Tüpraş announced that its subsidiary took over a giant photovoltaic project in Romania from Israeli developer Econergy Renewable Energy. Namely, Entek Elektrik agreed to pay EUR 32.9 million through its investment arm Enspire Enerji for Eco Sun Niculești, the permit holder, and Euromec-Ciocănari, which owns the land. Niculești is a commune north of capital Bucharest, in Dâmbovița county. The solar power plant is envisaged with 214 MW in nominal capacity. The project got technical connection approval in August for 177 MW from the country’s transmission system operator Transelectrica. Peak or nominal capacity refers to the highest possible generation of direct current in the solar panels. Such projects have power grid connections that are usually 20% lower. Transaction to be closed when project reaches ready-to-build stage Enspire Enerji will obtain the shares in the two project firms after regulatory clearance and when the project is ready to start construction, with all necessary permits, according to the terms of the deal. The transaction is expected to be executed by the end of January. Econergy said its strategy is to diversify the revenue stream by selling electricity and the projects that it develops as well as with management and construction services. The Israeli renewables company has a 2 GW pipeline in Romania, of which 246 MW is operational and 800 MW is under development and in construction. It estimated that 198 MW would be completed by the end of the year. Econergy co-owns Romania’s biggest solar park overall but also biggest one with solar trackers Econergy, which operates in Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Poland and Greece, completed the largest solar power plant in Romania last year in partnership with Nofar Energy. The Rătești system has 155 MW in peak capacity. Of note, Nofar broke ground on a 26 MW photovoltaic project last month in neighboring Serbia.

Monk Fryston BESS Construction Begins (2 November). - SSE Renewables initiated the construction of Monk Fryston, a 320MW/640MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), potentially the largest under construction in the UK. 6. National Grid's Battery Storage Streamlining (7 November). - The National Grid announced plans to expedite the connection of 10GW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity, offering earlier plug-in dates to accelerate the integration of these projects into the grid. “Large-scale solar, battery storage hybrid starts operations in South Africa” “Norwegian PV developer Scatec ASA has switched on a hybrid solar and battery storage facility in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.” APRIL 22, 2024 - PATRICK JOWETT “A 540 MW solar and 225 MW/1,140 MWh battery storage hybrid project has commenced operations in South Africa. The project, located in the town of Kenhardt in Northern Cape province, has been billed as one of the world’s largest hybrid solar and battery storage facilities in the world.” “The facility spans 879 hectares and measures 10 km north to south. Construction began in July 2022 and has seen the installation of almost 1 million PV modules. The battery facility comprises 456 units, each matching the size of a shipping container and weighing 30 tons.” “It is owned by Norwegian renewables developer Scatec ASA. The company holds a 51% stake in the $1 billion project, marked as the largest commitment in its history. South African investment company H1 Holdings holds 49%.” “Power from the facility will be sold to South African state-owned utility Eskom, under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
