Should companies make it mandatory for employees to take their vacation days? This piece highlights a recent Harris Poll survey revealing that 78% of Americans are not using the full amount of paid time off allowed by their employer. In response, more companies are considering mandatory vacation as a way of addressing high levels of employee reported stress and burnout. But does this get to the root problem? Significantly, among the employees not taking their allotted vacation time, 80% site work load and/or inadequate staffing as their primary reason for not using all of their paid time off. This is why approaching workplace wellbeing with a strategy that addresses both operations and culture is essential. Actively pursuing operational solutions that address chronic work overload, while also building cultures where taking time off is genuinely promoted and supported, must be part of a holistic strategy to reduce employee burnout. What's your company's vacation culture?

Where are you planning to take your next vacation? HR Firm Gusto recently shared a study on employees choosing to take time off of work, citing an 11% increase in people using vacation time since June 2022. Workers everywhere have long been reluctant to use allotted vacation time, whether to show dedication to their company or to bolster job security amid pandemic and recession concerns. This uptick in usage shows us a couple things. 1. Workers are more empowered now than ever to take breaks for physical and mental health benefits. 2. Employers are encouraging, if not requiring, that employees use their time-off and step away from work, which helps increase company happiness and employee retention. Mandatory time off: When taking holiday is part of the job As the pandemic extended workdays, nearly 60% of employees reported negative impacts from work-related stress, yet over half of American workers don’t use all their paid vacation days. To combat this, companies are experimenting with mandatory vacation policies. Firms like Goldman Sachs and We Are Rosie are leading this initiative, requiring employees to take a minimum amount of time off annually. This approach aims to foster a culture that values rest and tackles the barriers preventing workers from taking leave. While unlimited PTO policies are attractive, they often fail without a positive work culture encouraging actual time off. Mandatory vacation policies, by setting clear expectations, make it easier for employees to take leave without guilt. Experts agree that for these policies to succeed, they must be supported by a company culture that truly appreciates the need for time off. This shift represents a move towards creating more humane workplaces, acknowledging the need for rest and mental well-being in a high-stress work environment. #WorkLifeBalance #EmployeeWellbeing #VacationPolicies #CorporateCulture
