Why do we love algae, soil and wind in Mars? Well, they are three important things that are helping to deliver our Petcare Net Zero ambitions! 🐟 Our Royal Canin brand is innovating in alternative proteins using marine algae to replace fish oil, reducing pressure and environmental impact on marine ecosystems 🌽 Our Nutro brand is working on regenerative agriculture programs to promote healthy soil, which can sequester more carbon from the atmosphere and support more resilient crops and biodiversity 🍃 Sourcing renewable electricity from the Ford Ridge wind farm is enabling all of our US veterinary clinics and hospitals to run on 100% renewable electricity All that work is helping to add up to a big difference! Our latest Sustainable in a Generation Report (below) shows that Mars is on track to deliver a 50% reduction in our GHG emissions by 2030. Following the science and mobilizing resources works. We know there is still a long way to go, but I’m proud of the progress we’ve made across Mars so far and thank you to the thousands of Associates in Mars Petcare who are working to make a Better World for Pets while also improving our Mars footprint. #netzero #sustainability #climatesmartagriculture #partnerships Mars Marika McCauley Sine Barry Parkin Kevin Rabinovitch

Balancing Growth and Sustainability: The Mars Approach Balancing sustainability with business growth is a challenge many companies face. Yet, Mars, the company behind brands like Ben’s Rice, Pedigree, and M&Ms, has managed to do just that. Since 2015, Mars has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 16% while expanding its business by 60%, reaching over $50 billion in annual revenue. Central to Mars' strategy is sustainable sourcing for key ingredients like soy, cocoa, and beef, which account for 60% of its carbon footprint. By mapping its supply chain and shifting sourcing practices, Mars has reduced its environmental impact. For example, Mars assessed over 300,000 cocoa farms in 2023, leading to more sustainable farming practices. Mars Petcare has also contributed by exploring alternative ingredients such as micro-algae and insects, reducing the environmental impact of products like Royal Canin. Mars understands that sustainability requires investment. In 2023, the company committed $1 billion over three years to innovations aimed at reducing emissions, alongside $1.7 billion for projects like packaging redesigns and regenerative agriculture. This investment is integrated into Mars' core business strategy. Mars has aligned executive compensation with its sustainability goals. Forty percent of long-term incentives for top executives are tied to non-financial targets like emissions reductions, ensuring leadership is fully invested in achieving climate targets. Mars collaborates with suppliers to encourage sustainable agricultural practices. For example, Mars Snacking’s partnership with dairy cooperative FrieslandCampina involves initiatives to reduce methane emissions and improve manure management. Mars focuses on delivering measurable results rather than making vague promises. The company favours nature-based carbon removal solutions and aligns its short-term plans with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global temperature increases to below 1.5 degrees Celsius. Mars' ability to reduce emissions while growing its business is a powerful example of how sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand. By transforming its supply chain, incentivising leadership, and collaborating with suppliers, Mars has set a compelling blueprint for other companies looking to achieve similar goals. #Mars #Sustainability #GrowthInSustainability #GreenWorkSolution

🌍 Regenerative agriculture is key to protecting #biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for people and the planet. It’s a systemic change that can help implement National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) in rural landscapes. But we need to act together to make it the norm, not the exception. 📰 In a recent opinion piece published in Reuters, OP2B members highlight how #RegenerativeAgriculture addresses climate change, biodiversity loss, and socio-economic instability. Regenerative practices help to restore ecosystems, improve soil health, store carbon in the soil and builds farm resilience. 📢 OP2B members call to move beyond isolated projects and focus on landscape-level initiatives to drive large-scale change. This transformation requires collaboration across value chains, substantial investments and long-term support for farmers. 🌱 The call for large-scale action ties in with the discussions at #CBDCOP16 in Cali, which are crucial for reaching global biodiversity goals. Collective action and increased investment in regenerative agriculture supports NBSAPs by encouraging cooperation at the landscape level, helping to protect ecosystems in rural areas while supporting human activity. Read the full article here and explore how OP2B’s collective voice is driving the shift toward a nature-positive, climate-resilient future: https://lnkd.in/dG3jci-i

Today April 22nd is #EarthDay, a global event that brings attention to the environmental challenges we face, such as climate change, deforestation, pollution, and more. It’s a day dedicated to raising awareness about the sustainable practices we can adopt to protect our planet and ensure a safe, healthy future for generations to come. As our population grows, so does the strain on our resources. This Earth Day, let’s remember the importance of sustainable practices like regenerative agriculture, which can help us meet our food needs without compromising the health of our planet. Let’s use this day to spread the word, educate others, and take action towards a more sustainable future. After all, we only have one Earth. 🌍💚 Let's talk today about 🌱 Regenerative Agriculture: A Solution for Our Future As our global population continues to grow, the demand for food increases. But let’s remember, food doesn’t grow on its own. The cost of feeding our expanding population is not just financial, but environmental as well. American agriculture faces a trifecta of potentially devastating challenges: over-farming, development, and soil capacity decline. We’re losing soil 10 times faster than it’s replenished, with some experts predicting fewer than 60 harvests remaining. This is a wake-up call for all of us. But there’s hope. Enter Regenerative Agriculture. ☘ Regenerative Agriculture is a holistic land management practice that leverages the power of photosynthesis in plants to close the carbon cycle and build soil health, crop resilience, and nutrient density1. It’s an evolving holistic nature-based approach that boosts topsoil, food production, and farmers’ incomes. 🍆 Regenerative farming transforms farmers into environmental and societal heroes. It promotes the health of degraded soils by restoring their organic carbon. It sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide, reversing industrial agriculture’s contributions to climate change. Regenerative practices such as no-till farming and cover cropping are reducing erosion and water pollution, and in turn, producing healthier soils. 🌦 Regenerative Agriculture counters climate change and promotes food security by restoring soil, organic matter, and biodiversity as well as reducing atmospheric carbon. It’s a critical component of our future. Let’s support regenerative agriculture and promote sustainable farming techniques for the benefit of our environment. 📢 Remember, every bite we take comes at a cost. Let’s make it worth it. #RegenerativeAgriculture #Sustainability #ClimateChange #FoodSecurity A traditional Japanese art style inspired by Katsushika Hokusai that pretends to illustrate the concept of regenerative agriculture and the ticking clock behind it.
