Alpine chalet with that charm 🏔 Traditional Alpine chalets are low-lying structures, crouching on the mountainside. The traditional approach to Alpine construction provides ideal protection against snow and cold weather, and also from intense sunshine during the warmer months. Low-lying buildings with protruding roofs, window openings which are pragmatically limited to the minimum required size, and most often built with wood, a ubiquitous construction material found abundantly in Alpine regions. The owner and architect were intent on creating a home in a contemporary design, incorporating optimal sustainable energy standards, made possible by state-of-the-art construction techniques and technology. The minimal windows® system was easily able to meet all of the demands. The 300 days of sunshine a year, radiating through the generously- proportioned minimal windows®, can be shaded via discreet Venetian blinds, preventing the interior from heating up excessively. When the expedition company Explora planned a new nomadic journey connecting Chile with Bolivia, it was understood that the new 4- and 6-room Mountain Lodges in Bolivia needed to leave the smallest footprint on the community-owned land. Not only was it a necessity, but it was also the promise that Explora made to several communities with which Explora cooperated. Eco-sensitive architecture is just one component of a multi-layered agreement that ensures that tourism revenues benefit the community members. The Mountain Lodges offer dreamy nights’ stays far from civilization with minimal impact on the stark and fragile wilderness around them.
