Scott Galloway (AKA the Dog) says Friendship Pays: "Friendship is an economic accelerant. The economist Raj Chetty found that for people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, having wealthier friends “is the single strongest predictor of upward mobility.” Unemployed people who volunteer are 27% more likely to find work than those who do not, aided by the “social capital” (economist-speak for “friends”) they accumulate through volunteering. Regions with greater civic engagement are more resistant to economic slowdowns, and communities to which the residents have a strong emotional attachment see higher rates of GDP growth. The flip side? The CDC estimates that loneliness costs the U.S. economy $406 billion a year — more than the combined GDP of Vermont, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, South Dakota, and Rhode Island." #thedog #scottgalloway #friendship #volunteering #socialcapital #economicbenefits #employment https://lnkd.in/daM7mewg

Community engagement is very key in conservation
Wildlife Biologists and Conservation Trainer || CEO at CHD Conservation Kenya. Founder at Kang4Nature. Future Rising Fellow @GirlRising. Thought Leader
One thing I've learned about #community outreach programs are more likely to succeed when they adopt a people-centered. We have witnessed this first hand at CHD Conservation Kenya. This means that before initiating any action, the program staff should listen to the community members and understand their needs, perspectives, and preferences. Listening is a powerful tool for building trust, rapport, and collaboration with the community, as well as for identifying the most relevant and feasible solutions for the issues at hand. Not only do farmers markets benefit our state economy, but they also provide a hub for building community. Shoppers at the farmers market have 15-20 social interactions compared to the 1 or 2 at the grocery store. Farmers markets are essential in fostering community connections, especially in a state as big as ours. These are the farmers markets spread across Texas. Commissioner Miller encourages everyone to visit a farmers' market to support farmers and local businesses #TexasAgricultureMatters #FarmersMarketWeek

Finding Reward in Volunteer Work During My Job Search 🐾 Despite being in the midst of a job search for the past few months, I've been keeping busy with various projects, one of which holds a special place in my heart: becoming a foster for dogs in need. Meet Dakota. She came into my life after being rescued from a traumatic situation where she was living in a homeless encampment, being beaten every day. Finally a good samaritan called the police, and she was rescued, only to discover she was pregnant with 5 puppies. She's had her babies and they've since been adopted. Now, she's on a journey to learn to trust humans again. Fostering isn't easy. It tests your patience, challenges you, and sometimes leaves you emotionally drained. But the reward? It's immeasurable. Witnessing the transformation in Dakota, seeing her take small steps toward healing and trust, is nothing short of incredible. While I continue my search for full-time employment, I find immense fulfillment in the work I'm doing as a volunteer. It's a reminder that passion and purpose can be found in many forms, even during challenging times. If you're considering getting involved in volunteering or fostering, I highly encourage it. The impact you can make, both on the lives of animals and on your own well-being, is truly remarkable. #VolunteerWork #FosterDog #PassionProject #JobSearchJourney #fosteringsaveslives #animalrescue

#NoFutureWithoutFriendships #LonelinessEpidemic #PositiveMasculineRoleModels #YaariHaiImaanMera Thanks Gary Sussman, my Israeli yaar, for this, nothing is going to be saved without friendships and intimacy. This unemotionalization of the modern human is the biggest crises where the will to build community is missing, with each on their own. Friendship outside of family and biological relationships is the first step outside closed borders of identities. One of the iconic songs of 1970's with Pran and Amitabh Bachchan in the film Zanjeer was : "#Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi Pyaar ho bandon se ye sabase badi hai bandagi" ( Friendship is my faith, my friend my life Love with humans, is the biggest bonding) "We are wired to seek and sustain relationships and cannot survive without them. The future of the human race won’t turn on space travel or climate tech, but on our ability to attach to others. A sense that we matter, that we can call on and be called upon by others to ease burdens and celebrate joy. A study of Romanian orphanages, where babies received adequate nutrition but were deprived of affection, found they had smaller brains and reduced cognitive function. Videos of the “still face experiment” show how intensely babies crave not just affection, but also social connection with their parents. Among adults in the U.S., social isolation increases the risk of premature death by 29% — more than smoking 15 cigarettes per day. In sum, loneliness kills. There’s nothing pithy or revelatory about the solution. We need to advocate for programs (after-school groups, athletic leagues, affordable education, public places, paid nonprofit work, national service, vocational training). And also, money — more of it. More economic support (e.g., a negative tax rate) that levels up young people who’ve seen their share of wealth leak to older Americans through a set of policies designed by old people elected by older people. The single point of failure for a young man is when he loses a male role model. Boys need men, full stop. In my view, the ultimate expression of masculinity is to become irrationally passionate about the well-being of a young person who you are not biologically related to. But not enough of us are there for them and fighting for the resources they need. We are failing our brothers, sons, neighbors, and country. Being a man means making better men. We have adversaries, but our real enemy is loneliness."
