The California Energy Commission's recent $1.9 billion zero-emissions vehicle infrastructure plan reflects that hydrogen is a solution for the commercial vehicle sector. With a substantial $1.14 billion allocated to help fund hydrogen trucks, school buses, public transit, and hydrogen fueling stations – it’s great to see this four-year spending plan placing hydrogen at the forefront as a solution for medium to heavy-duty transportation. https://lnkd.in/eYy6JswY #Hydrogen #CaliforniaEnergyCommission #ZeroEmissions #HydrogenEconomy

https://lnkd.in/evMPjm-t Thank you Michael Barnard for an eye opening article that exposes pitfalls of hydrogen. After Trying Hydrogen, German Rail Operator Picks Batteries Grid. Hydrogen as an energy carrier plays always fail once spreadsheet jockeys are allowed to enter realistic numbers and compare to clear alternatives, instead of being constrained to fantasies about free hydrogen and delusions about batteries made of gold and platinum. For home heating and transport electrification using renewable electricity will always be much more efficient and economical. #hydrogen #batteries #electrification #transport

Excellent article on E&E about the urgency and importance of starting pipes and wires infrastructure planning efforts with some of my quotes and overview of work that we do with our partners from Guidehouse. There is an urgent need to accelerate the development of critical U.S. connective infrastructure (electric and hydrogen) to enable direct electrification and the adoption of low-carbon hydrogen across industrial use cases. The development of integrated pipes and wires faces long timelines along with regulatory and policy uncertainty, which are critical risks to the optimized energy infrastructure needed for the industrial energy transition. On a nutshell: a) we need to optimize infrastructure development between electrons and hydrogen; b) plan retrofit of natural gas infrastructure where technically possible; c) build alignment across key stakeholder groups (government, civil society, industry) to create an enabling environment for infrastructure development. #cleanhydrogen #greenhydrogen #infrastructure #energytransition Danielle Vitoff Lisa Frantzis Darek Imadi Todd White - PE, PMP, MBA Patrick Molloy Tessa Weiss Thomas Koch Blank

Oleksiy Tatarenko Hawaii Gas has as much as 15% H2 in their gas system on Oahu, they have been mixing this since 1974. Everyone else is doing studies at about 2%. Hawaii Gas is an outlier/edge case. In order to justify large infrastructure, such as H2 pipelines, you must have demand (long term and high value), something that is lacking not just because of lack of availability but also clarity on economics and regulations on H2. H2 pipe above ground is ~$1M per km, you ALSO need a lot of compression to move that molecule, and right now they suck from a reliability/cost/lead time perspective. Let’s put this in the “never gonna happen at scale” box. H2 will remain being used at the point of production, just like it has always been…..because moving it doesn’t make sense from an energy input perspective (embedded carbon intensity) and associated costs.

Element 2 wins government support for Teesside airport hydrogen project Element 2, the hydrogen infrastructure specialist that is currently the subject of a reverse takeover onto the UK share market using cash shell Pineapple Power, is already on the sharp end of the development of the UK’s hydrogen fuel plans. Element 2 is the beneficiary of a UK government grant to build four hydrogen refueling stations in the country’s north-east. These will be primarily for use by trucks. It is envisaged that hydrogen’s immediate utility with road transport will be with long range haulage and potentially also municipal transport, rather than private cars. #hydrogenfuel #hydrogeneconomy #hydrogen #ukgov

Revitalising hydrogen refuelling infrastructure: Calling for greater government and industry collaboration. By Brett Ryan In recent years, the UK has faced challenges with its transportation infrastructure, and hydrogen refuelling stations are no exception. There are currently six hydrogen refuelling stations open in the UK, down from 10 just two years ago. Clearly, this does not paint a picture of the thriving, growing and essential industry the UK requires to bring down emissions associated with transport – which has been the highest polluting sector in the UK since 2016, accounting for more than a quarter of the UK’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. So, what can be done to bring this worrying trajectory to a halt? For one, we can bring an end to the debate around hydrogen vs electrification. In a recent interview, representatives from Ineos criticised the government for backing a single horse in this debate, stating that this would ultimately lead the strategy to fail. It is Hydrogen UK’s view that electrification and hydrogen will complement each other in order to achieve a low-carbon transport future, and ignoring the very real benefits of one solution will only hinder the progress of the entire industry. https://lnkd.in/dqamk2nk
