New European Heat Pump Market Report highlights the need to solve UK’s electricity and gas price disparity. The European Heat Pump Association’s 2024 market report highlights the crucial impact of a low electricity and gas price ratio in accelerated heat pump deployment. The report illustrates that those European countries with a high ‘spark gap’ (the ratio between household electricity and gas prices) also have a lower annual total of sales of heat pumps per household. Interesting report from the EHPA. Both Italy and Poland took big dives in sales due to changes in incentives. Which does beg the question, how do we move heat-pumps from an incentive led market to a consumer led one?
Some European countries’ heat pump sales grew last year, but most did not. Why? One reason is key: Changing national policy measures. In 2022 governments increased support for people investing in heat pumps. In 2023 much of that support was restricted or removed. What does this mean? It means unsettled investors and consumers… Plus, electricity prices are several times higher than gas, undermining savings from energy efficient heat pumps. How to stabilise the market? Prompt-month natural gas prices continue to trade in the $2.45-$2.60/MMBtu range, with above-average temperatures keeping demand for heating load in check. Since our last update, Henry Hub natural gas spot prices moved 9% lower, falling from $2.62 to $2.37/MMBtu. Read more on the current energy markets in our December edition of the Advisor.

What's happening with natural gas? The retailer offers we have seen are no better than $3.43/GJ. Short-term forward market pricing is now slightly below $2.00/GJ, with 2024 expected to average around $2.00/GJ and pricing below $3.50/GJ until winter 2025. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eA2DaWZ3

Summary Enthalpy of mixing Since it is an ideal gas, PV = constant (no work) and dU = 0 at a constant temperature for an ideal gas. Therefore, the change in enthalpy (dH) at the common point where the gases mix will be zero. The enthalpy of mixing remains unchanged in this case. Remember, the internal energy U = 3/2KB T [ KB is Boltzmann constant and T is temperature]. Temperature is directly proporional to internal energy. This means at constant temperature dU = 0 (ideal gas) PV = constant also because it is an ideal gas [no work]. Therefore, dH = U PV , 0 0 = 0 Therefore, the enthalpy of mixing is zero. Entropy of mixing In this case, the entropy of mixed gas will increase because moles of the gas are increasing, n = n1 n2. Boltzmann's entropy equation can express this. This corresponds to increasing the W that represents microstates in the equation S=kBlnW.

"The electricity and natural gas markets have been relatively flat over the last month. Bullish factors include the on-going heat in the South and record power-burn, but healthy natural gas storage levels and robust production have kept prices from moving significantly higher in the near term." #electricitymarkets #energymarkets #naturalgas #marketupdate

Yesterday we announced that the new price cap will come into force from 1 Jan 24. Unit prices can help to work out how much energy suppliers can charge you for the energy you use if you are on a standard tariff. The price you pay for the standing charge and each unit of energy you use are different depending on where you live. You can check what the standing charges and unit rates for your region here ⬇️ https://ow.ly/fmhj50Qb1Tb
