I am a huge advocate for: 1. taking your time with clients; 2. not taking for granted that people understand legal terms like "executor", "trustee", "power of attorney" etc.; 3. explaining legal terms using practical and specific examples that the client can follow; and 4. using diagrams, to ensure that my clients understand the advice provided and can provide me with clear and well thought out instructions.
Older Western Australians have the right to be safe and to be treated with dignity and respect in our community. The "Best Practice Guidelines for Interviewing Older People at Risk" is a first of its kind and supports legal and justice professionals, law enforcement, financial advisors and other relevant service providers in providing best practice legal and advocacy support services to older people in our community through improved interviewing practices. It stresses the importance of taking your time to ensure that the person understands the questions being asked and encourages the use of aids, such as diagrams, to assist this understanding. Today we're highlighting the Volunteer State, so we'll talk about what encourages people to volunteer. Behavioral sciences can teach us many things about recruiting volunteers, including: - People are more likely to volunteer when their well-being is already high; - People are more likely to volunteer for a later date than something in the near future; - Some people want recognition, others want to help their communities, and all these different opinions can impact outreach and marketing efforts; - People are also more likely to volunteer when they can do it with a friend.
