It's like a mini-vacation without the travel expenses! 3. Spicing up Learning: Let's be real – textbooks can sometimes be a snooze fest. Injecting diverse cultural celebrations into the curriculum can add zest, color, and rhythm to the regular school routine. 4. Building a Diverse Toolkit: The world our students are entering is becoming more interconnected by the day. By celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, we're equipping them with a broader cultural toolkit. 5. Reflecting Our World: Even if our student body isn’t predominantly Hispanic, our world is increasingly diverse. Recognizing and valuing Hispanic Heritage Month signals to our future leaders that everyone's heritage has a rightful place on the world's stage, and that every story is worth listening to. In essence, taking the time to honor Hispanic Heritage Month isn’t just about checking off a cultural box – it’s about expanding minds, hearts, and opportunities for all our students. Safeguarding, not manipulating by a foreign polluter. Our hospitals are crying out for staff, yet we see our children being influenced and offered apprenticeships by an overseas company whose operation creates emissions that will severely impact the health of future generations and their planet. In Sussex, local schools are allowing Gatwick into the classroom – permitting access to vulnerable children, influencing them into thinking that aviation is glamourous, and encouraging them to visit the airport on the pretence of learning about science, technology, engineering, and maths. This is simply promoting to our young, impressionable children that jobs should be sought in an industry that is one of the major contributors to global warming. Quoting government: ‘The Green Jobs Taskforce launched in 2020 to set the direction for the job market as we transition to a high-skill, low carbon economy. The taskforce concluded in July 2021’ – so why not use greener forms of energy and transport to educate future generations, so that greener thinking is encapsulated from the outset – rather than promoting cheap leisure holidays and “flying is ok”, when we know it is not? The Taskforce group detailed the UK’s ambitions for green jobs: · the skills needed to drive a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic · the skills needed to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 · how the UK can ensure green jobs are good jobs, and open to all · how workers in high carbon-sectors can be supported to transition to the new green economy. https://lnkd.in/etxb5bwj Yet local children are being wooed by a commercial airport that seeks a new runway which will add anything from 0.5m-1.5m extra tonnes of carbon every year, plus greenhouse gases – from a second runway alone. Hospitals, including Redhill, are offering apprenticeships – but will students seek these positions if we allow the brainwashing of our children now to an industry portrayed as glamourous? Will this be encouraging them to study STEM subjects to save lives? Statutory guidance suggests that our vulnerable children should be protected from outside influences; they should be shown safeguarding when it comes to the commissioning of education and training. So, is it appropriate to allow young minds to be so influenced by a commercial airport when the industry in question (as with this Sussex airport) is struggling to decarbonise? CAGNE suggests that places of education would do better directing STEM education towards greener forms of transport or the retrofitting of homes with alternative fuels. This would aid our transition to net zero, sustainability for employment and longevity of careers, as suggested by the government’s own task force.

That darn STEM word is EVERYWHERE. STEM has become the tagline for almost everything in education nowadays. The reality is, if you don’t consider yourself a STEM expert, you probably find the word intimidating. Like, what does it even mean?? My thoughts on STEM education and what really matters when we push STEM education for K-12 learners.

I am thrilled to be joining a panel at the Children’s Media Conference in Sheffield on Wednesday 10th July 2024, 5:00pm - 6:00pm BST. The panel will take place in Showroom Cinema 2. The title is Inclusivity Now: The Lion’s Story ABOUT THE TALK A collaboration between CMC’s Inclusivity Now and Thinking Differently strands, we provide insights into the importance of ensuring diverse storytellers create and produce their own stories, and examples of successful projects. Children primarily reside in three spaces: home, school, and community. To create better connections between and among these spaces, mainstream media content can be used as a vehicle to inform and engage youth in educational contexts. But for this media to be effective, it must convey authentic, relevant stories about those communities in their own voice. There is an African proverb that says: ’Until the lion has his own historian, the story of the hunt will be told from the perspective of the hunter.’ We need more stories from the perspective of the lion; as well as the hunter. Community-based creators and studios using innovative distribution methods are essential for success when ‘Thinking Differently’ about the role of media and storytelling in education.
