County leaders may limit how much money they give to nonprofit groups and projects serving low-income neighborhoods in light of looming budget challenges. The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors today is considering capping community spending per district at $1 million, but potentially raising the ceiling to $2 million for districts with greater need, such as District 2. The county’s technical term for such spending is “inventory items.” During the budget process, supervisors can propose one-time funds related to various community programs. An important session on increasing and coordinating public funding for children’s programs at the Grantmakers for Education conference. In our local community, philanthropic funding accounts for less than 2% of total funding for children and youth programs, including out of school time (OST) programs. Therefore, public funding is where leverage is needed to make the big difference in addressing equity, Justice and fairness. #edfunders23

It was an easy way for me to contribute to what I feel is a very worthy cause. What is one word you would use to sum up the United Way's work? -Essential What is one thing about United Way you think people do not know but should? -That 99% of money donated stays in Lee County, and local volunteers go through a long allocations process to determine funding for all of the nonprofits supported by United Way. You can rest assured that United Way is a good steward of all money received. What would you say to someone who is considering investing in the United Way? -Your investment -- whether time or money -- will contribute toward lifechanging and necessary assistance to the lives of local children, seniors, families and individuals. Everyone deserves to have their most basic needs met, and United Way makes it easy to be a small part of that assistance and to support the real heroes: our local nonprofits. What is your favorite thing about the Lee County community? -The people!

In 2024, the KFC Foundation will award $10,000 to up to 100 nonprofits "to make their Kentucky Fried Wishes come true." From the Foundation's website: > "We’re looking for tangible, actionable projects that are feasible to accomplish with the $10,000 grant and will make an immediate impact in your community." > If you have a larger project (i.e., 100-mile trail restoration), break it down into something that $10,000 could cover in full (i.e., 10-mile trail restoration out of our 100-mile project). If additional funding is needed, detailed plans for securing additional resources must be provided in the Project Budget.
