International Book Giving Day is an annual celebration held on February 14th with the aim of increasing access to books and promoting a love of reading worldwide. It is a day dedicated to spreading the joy of reading by giving books to children, families, schools, libraries, and communities. The objectives of International Book Giving Day include: Encouraging people to give books as gifts: Individuals, organizations, and businesses are encouraged to give books to children and communities who may not have access to them. Promoting literacy and a love of reading: By providing books to children and encouraging them to read, International Book Giving Day aims to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning. Supporting literacy initiatives: The day also raises awareness about the importance of literacy and supports initiatives that promote literacy education and access to books for all. Ways to participate in International Book Giving Day include donating books to libraries, schools, or literacy organizations, organizing book drives, giving books as gifts to children or friends, or simply sharing your favorite books with others. The goal is to spread the joy and benefits of reading to people of all ages and backgrounds around the world.

Today, I had a great opportunity to participate in a meaningful virtual volunteering event focused on enhancing literacy for first graders. The event, "Education & Literacy: Classic Sight Words for First Graders Kit," in collaboration with Project Helping, was an enlightening experience that not only aimed at improving literacy but also at nurturing a love for learning among young students. 📚 The heart of today's activity was the creation of the Classic Sight Words for First Graders Kit. This carefully designed kit included 75 sight word flashcards, a journal, a pencil pouch, writing utensils, and some fidget toys, all aimed at supporting first graders in their literacy journey. The process of making these flashcards was not just an act of volunteering but a profound reminder of the impact of education and the role of literacy in empowering our youth. ✨ Participating alongside my colleagues under the banner of BDO Counts was a reminder of the power of collective effort. BDO USA has always championed the cause of giving back to the community. It was heartwarming to see the enthusiasm and dedication of everyone involved, all driven by the common goal of making a difference in the lives of young learners. As I reflect on today's experience, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to such a wonderful cause. I Need a Volunteer Yesterday I spoke to the new teachers in our school district. The first thing I did was ask for a volunteer. However, stated before the volunteer comes up I told the teachers that the task would be: 1) extremely challenging; 2) they will be embarrassed; and 3) several failures is a guarantee. I then yelled from on top of the table... I need a volunteer! Nobody moved at the request for some time, and then this brother eventually came up. I told the teachers that I just wanted to give someone $20 for lunch. A loud "awww man" followed. I then asked the new teachers what prevented them from volunteering? Of course, they mentioned: 1) the task would be difficult; 2) they didn't want to be embarrassed; and 3) and that failure was a guarantee and they didn't want to fail. I then asked them what if I had 102 kindergarten students and asked them the same thing with the same three guarantees. How many students would have volunteered? Everyone yelled an emphatic "102!" Next, I asked if those 102 kindergarten students would have walked or ran to me? Everyone yelled, "Ran." I then reminded them to be cognizant of the factors in school that robs students of their fearlessness to volunteer, the grit to persevere, and their boldness to be shamless when taking a risk. A few example were: 1) the red ink and failing grades and 2) not being to blurt out an answer in fear of punishment if you don't raise your hand (these are just a few). I reminded them to be cognizant of the things in school that robs students of the aforementioned as they move from grade to grade each year. I wish all administrators, teachers, and school staff an amazing 23-24 school year.

It is a remarkable privilege to be able to read, whether it is a natural talent or acquired through hard work. Reading opens up pathways to unexplored worlds, provides entertainment, sparks the imagination, and has numerous positive neurological and psychological benefits for children. Studies indicate that children who are read to from an early age develop greater literacy skills, experience heightened language and communication development, feel more connected to their caregivers, and are better prepared for kindergarten and future academic pursuits.
