Research has shown that participation in ongoing professionally facilitated support groups provides many benefits, including decreased emotional distress, less pain, quicker return to work, and better quality of life. CSC offers separate weekly groups for people living with cancer, as well as for family and friends who are supporting a loved one with cancer. Cancer Research UK has today launched its #LongerBetterLives manifesto. Citing “cancer is a fixable problem” it champions the unique role of charities, supported by cutting-edge science and #healthinnovations, in expanding how prevention, diagnosis and treatment is transformed. In March 2024, Macmillan Cancer Support, the University of Bristol, Standing Together Against Domestic Abuse, with input from IRISi Interventions, launched a toolkit to help healthcare staff identify and respond to domestic abuse in cancer patients. Created in 2000, World Cancer Day has grown into a positive movement for everyone, everywhere to unite under one voice to face one of our greatest challenges in history. Educating, Preventing and Eradicating Cancer as we know it. Here in Delaware, CSCDE’s health equity efforts center on three values: access, affordability, and inclusivity, offered at no-cost. Access to and inclusivity of programming and patient education around the importance of screenings, prevention, and healthy lifestyles, especially for those communities who have been historically underrepresented and under-resourced, is accomplished via in-person, hybrid, and virtual offerings. We also ensure access to and affordability of quality health care, to include the prevention and mitigation of financial toxicity; we address health-related social needs so that each patient, caregiver, and loved one impacted by cancer can engage with programs and services that meet their unique needs. A child's cancer diagnosis shouldn't leave families in financial distress. Unfortunately, this is an all-too-common reality, especially for lower income families who are hit the hardest. According to a July 2023 study in the journal Pediatric Blood and Cancer, 68% of low income caregivers experienced significant household material hardship one year after diagnosis, compared to 38% of middle income families and 8.7% of high income families. How can we help rare disease communities more? Many of us are fortunate to get to work with amazing people in the rare disease space, whether it is fund raising, developing therapeutics, mentoring, and bringing awareness to the over 10,000 different rare diseases where only about 500 have approved treatments. I am always inspired to do more because of people like Alexandra Gaudlap from the Raging Raymond Foundation who drives awareness and supports researchers looking into VAMP2 and others navigating the challenges rare disease patients and their families face. https://lnkd.in/eV3Ktx4d #RareDiseases #rarediseaseday
