I am continually surprised by regulations requiring large MINIMUM street/lane widths inside cities. Even if a developer is paying to install it, it is an increased cost to the city to maintain it and deal with rainwater runoff. Cities should instead consider MAXIMUM street/lane widths as the default with more pavement only in special circumstances that require it.
A new study from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health adds to the body of evidence that wide lanes on urban streets promote more crashes, while narrow lanes are safer. The jury is in. It is long past time to make this our default approach whenever a street is restriped or repaved.
