- The WHO launched a framework in May 2023 to promote the meaningful engagement of people with health conditions. - The framework aims to involve individuals with non-communicable diseases in co-creating healthcare, including mental health and neurological conditions. - The framework is the fourth and final report in a series that began in 2021, based on the motto "nothing for us, without us." - The reports have relied on individuals with lived experience, who have provided their insights through informal consultations, sharing their experiences, and providing feedback on drafts. - Meaningful engagement is defined as the respectful, dignified, and equitable inclusion of individuals with lived experience, valuing their expertise to improve health outcomes. - The initiative by the WHO seeks to ensure that the voices and experiences of individuals with non-communicable diseases are heard and valued, creating more patient-centric healthcare systems. #WHO #Healthcare #MeaningfulEngagement #PatientCentric #Inclusion #LivedExperiencen https://lnkd.in/e6TDSgmk

Today marks #MaternalHealthAwarenessDay... Established in 2016 by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) on January 23, bringing attention to the maternal health crisis. Ensuring access to postpartum care is of utmost importance, yet various social determinants can impede women from receiving sufficient support. CDC data STILL reveals alarming statistics: 1. The maternal mortality rate for Black and American Indian/Alaska Native women is 2 to 3 times higher than that of white women. 2. Black, non-Hispanic women face a two to three times higher risk of pregnancy-related causes leading to death compared to other races. 3. Black, non-Hispanic women are twice as likely to experience stillbirth than women of other races. These disparities underscore the urgent need to address maternal health inequalities and advocate for equitable access to care to all birthing people. Back at my desk today after an insightful MediWales Connects event in Cardiff, I'm reflecting on the discussions, or rather the lack thereof, regarding women's health. As I spend my day writing funding applications for perimenopause product trials, I'm struck by the absence of focus on a stage of life that affects potentially half the population, including around 600,000 people currently in Wales. We need to address the gap in research for perimenopausal health, an inevitable phase, yet one of the most under-researched areas. Wales has a unique opportunity to lead the way in women's health, particularly in perimenopausal care. Will we rise to the challenge? The team I'm working with, alongside the Universities in discussion, are ready to tackle this. Now, we need funding and capacity. For far too many years women in midlife have been ignored, mistreated and neglected by the healthcare system. Post childbearing years, we’ve found ourselves in a care desert, just as perimenopause and menopause starts. We have been told by providers to "power through" our symptoms and offered no relief, despite the fact that safe, effective treatments have existed for decades. Unnecessary suffering and neglect has harmed women’s careers, marriages, emotional wellbeing, and long term health. It has left us feeling discouraged about growing older. Campaigners from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Menopause are urging that women receive a "menopause health check" from GPs at the age of 40. This initiative aims to incorporate questions about menopausal symptoms into the existing midlife health checkups provided by family doctors. A recent survey of 2,000 menopausal women disclosed that merely 12% were officially diagnosed by a healthcare professional, with the majority self-diagnosing after conducting their own research. Moreover, just one in four women had a positive experience discussing menopause-related concerns with their GP. The proposal suggests that all individuals should receive a check every five years starting at age 40, allowing healthcare providers to identify those at risk of conditions like heart disease and diabetes. This health assessment would also offer lifestyle advice and medication when appropriate. The primary purpose of these checks is to inquire about perimenopausal or menopausal symptoms in women aged 40 and above, ensuring they can access support at the appropriate time. The average age of menopause is 51, but many women experience perimenopausal symptoms for years before that. In some instances, GPs have dismissed these symptoms, leading to underdiagnosis. In addition to these recommendations, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Menopause and the campaign group Menopause Mandate are urging major political parties to endorse their demands, which include an evaluation of female-specific testosterone treatment for potential licensing. This initiative seeks to improve women's health and well-being by addressing the challenges and concerns associated with menopause. What are your thoughts?

More needs to be done to ensure a plan to address women's health #inequalities in #Scotland is making a difference, doctors have warned. The 2021 plan includes recommendations for better treatment of #endometriosis, the menopause and heart disease. Prof Glasier gave the example of how men and women in their 60s going to a GP complaining of chest #pains were often treated differently, leading to delays in women getting diagnosed with heart disease. On March 18, President Joe Biden signed an executive order and announced new actions to improve #womenhealth research and #innovation in the U.S. The Biden administration also announced more than 22 new actions by U.S. federal agencies, including the The National Institutes of Health, FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Hospital for Special Surgery, United States Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Science Foundation (NSF). According to the release, these actions and commitments are designed to promote women’s health research by: ✅ Prioritizing and increasing women’s health research investments; ✅ Fostering innovation and discovery in women’s health; ✅ Expanding and leveraging women’s health data collection and analysis; ✅ Strengthening coordination, infrastructure and training to support women’s health research; and ✅ Improving #womenshealth across the life span. https://lnkd.in/gcgGEYiZ
