Happy International Girls in ICT Day! Women tech entrepreneurs are breaking barriers and reshaping the tech landscape across the globe. However, a leaky pipeline and gender finance gap persists, limiting women’s participation in the ICT industry as employees or as entrepreneurs. In Vietnam, for instance, women make up only 26% of tech university graduates and 34% of the tech workforce (1) and only 12.6% of private capital raised go to women-led startups. Canada’s information and communication technology (#ICT) sector generated $270 billion in 2023 alone. And while the industry has seen incredible growth, unfortunately, women’s representation in tech has largely stayed stagnant. This lack of representation has contributed to a toxic “boys' club” culture that’s prevented women from growing within the sector—a sector that needs their involvement to see continued growth and success. Not only are women founders in ICT developing solutions to evolving challenges, but they’re showing other women and girls that they too have the ability to lead within the sector. Despite progress, women are still underrepresented in tech fields, holding only 26.2% of full professorships and less than a quarter of self-employed roles in Science, Engineering, and ICT. This disparity is critical as tech markets grow rapidly in the EU.   HerTechVenture aims to change this by inspiring, recruiting, and retaining women in tech. Using a gender-based and intersectional approach, the project offers training and community support to break stereotypes and boost female confidence, innovation, and entrepreneurship in tech. This is a testament to the potential and innovation that women bring to the tech industry. However, this achievement also underscores the existing gender gap in tech.
