Pensacola employees and their families volunteered more than 175 hours in partnership with From the Ground Up Community Garden to design and build a tiered, mandala garden layout consisting of 16 revitalized garden beds under a previously abandoned underpass. With the support of an HDR Foundation Employee Network Group grant sponsored by Phillip Walker, PE, the new garden layout requires less strain for gardeners of all ages and better suits school field strips, music events and art exhibits. “Although it was hard work, our team is always grateful to be giving back to our community and building a place for our community to grow,” Phillip said. Lighting controls have revolutionized energy efficiency, user experience and architectural expression. Occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting, dimming, color temperature tuning, individual luminaire addressing and third-party system integration are some of the countless advancements since the invention of the light switch by John Henry Holmes in 1884. The evolution of lighting controls has streamlined energy efficiency and safety in buildings, integrating emergency lighting systems with modern technology to enhance both functionality and aesthetics. Eric Rushenberg, senior lighting designer, has been featured in a new Consulting-Specifying Engineer article, explaining how to approach revised UL listing requirements when specifying emergency lighting controls. This article is a useful resource for understanding how: UL Standard 924 has updated its product listing requirements consistent with well adopted codes and standards, learning how control manufacturers are meeting requirements, ensuring products are individually listed and labeled whilst identifying a specification strategy for controlling emergency lights. Meet Greg Eberhardt, principal structural engineer based in Brisbane, Australia, where he leads the Queensland civil structures division. His work often includes inspections next to live traffic, in tunnels, on bridges, under bridges and in creeks, so safety is always at the top of his mind. “It can be very easy to cut corners with safety, but it's also easy for something to end in catastrophe,” says Greg. “Coming home to my family every night isn’t something I take for granted.” When he’s not working, Greg and his family are almost certainly enjoying the great outdoors—fishing in Moreton Bay, off-road driving on local beaches, or simply enjoying their garden with their dogs. Thank you, Greg, for the leadership you bring every day to help keep HDR safe at work and beyond. #SafetyMonth
