Decreasing Resource 📉 Each month, we hear about the decrease in resource within the wider Engineering industry. Upon the background of Manufacturing demand in a growth phase, which filters down the supply chain. One of the key metrics we look at is the number of apprentices starting within Engineering. More importantly, how many are completing their apprentice? How long do they remain within the business, once their apprenticeship is complete? Neutronic Technologies is taking a longer-term view at how we acquire students to commit to a career in Engineering. Furthermore, it’s as important to the work we do to keep them within the industry and supporting the aspirations of the organisation. The Industrial repair industry specifically, needs to think differently and act differently to enable us to manage the demand from customers for the next 2/5/10 years.

As part of celebrating National Apprentice Week, we chatted with one of our recently qualified apprentices, Harry Dawson, to find out what he enjoyed and learnt from his apprenticeship with LB Bentley. Harry recently completed his apprenticeship an NVQ Level 3 – Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technician. Q: What do you like about Engineering and what appealed to you about completing an Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technician apprenticeship? Harry: What appealed to me was this apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to use my initiative, and I enjoy and excel in the problem solving aspect of engineering. Q: What skills have you gained on this apprenticeship? Harry: I would say the fundamental skills I have gained that I use on a day to day basis are problem solving, general machining and CNC knowledge and probably the most important is self confidence in my own abilities. Q: What other things have you learnt on the apprenticeship? Harry: Team work and learning that everyone has an integral part of being a team member. Also, learning more about the production engineering and product design. Q: What are the strengths you have developed over the apprenticeship? Harry: I have learnt to be more resourceful and have developed my initiative to think of other ways to approach problems and find solutions. As part of celebrating National Apprentice Week, we chatted with one of our current apprentices, D’Andre Palmer, to find out what he is enjoying and learning from his current apprenticeship with LB Bentley. D’Andre is currently completing an apprenticeship as a Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technician. Q: What do you like about engineering? D: I like having the skills to be able to design and make something, and really appreciate creating and engineering something from the start to a finished product. Q: What skills have you gained? D: During my apprenticeship I have developed skills on the manual lathes and milling machines. I have also learnt a lot about problem solving and tolerances. Q: What else have you learnt? D: I have learnt that being patient is fundamental in any role and apprenticeship. Time keeping is also another valuable skill that I have learnt. Q: What are your strengths? D: I keep a very level head with my work and stay resilient even when maybe not succeeding with tasks on the first try. I keep going until I get the job done to the required level of quality and output. Excellent news that the North East Mayor will be approving a $14.6 million investment in a manufacturing skills facility to create a new generation of skilled local workers in #electricvehicle and #battery technology. MADE NE aims to be self-sustaining in five years, generating revenue linked with the delivery of apprenticeships, sub-letting space to businesses aligned with the goals of the project and by making Nissan’s training commercially available so that others can benefit. Newcastle University has worked to develop the plan in partnership with Nissan Motor Corporation, The North East Combined Authority, Sunderland City Council, Education Partnership North East, New College Durham, AESC, Vantec, , the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, and the North East Automotive Alliance (NEAA). This plan represents a fantastic opportunity for our students and graduates. Newcastle University has recently launched a Level 6 Product Design and Development Engineer Degree Apprenticeship, with currently three specialisms: batteries, advanced manufacturing (automation and control), and power electronics, machines and drives. https://lnkd.in/eNm7rQ5h

Is underpinning knowledge a dead concept in vocational training. There have been several academic papers written over the years looking to define underpinning knowledge, and some current practices would indicate it is not understood. If an apprentice demonstrates he or she can create and maintain a vacuum of below 500 microns, does this indicate they have a deep understanding of why this is required, and the system consequence of poor evacuation practices. Why does the training package still require a electrical/refrigeration apprentices to use a file, hacksaw and tap a thread when there are multiple cordless power tools that perform the same function. Clearly because it develops basic hand skills and an underpinning knowledge of mechanical concepts. The examples are endless and in every unit of competence. Will the skills gap ever be closed if a true depth of knowledge is not developed and assessed during an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships have been around since the Middle Ages in Europe, a concept where the experienced pass on their knowledge and skills to the inexperienced. This no longer seems to be a valued partnership in a world of constant change and disruption. You definitely need innovation to drive change but innovation requires depth of knowledge.

Not just another post please read. Let me share a true story about a young, vulnerable apprentice who faced significant challenges. Starting at 16, this apprentice struggled to secure an apprenticeship but eventually began training at a training centre, developing skills as a Mechatronic Engineer alongside further education. A year into the apprenticeship, the hosting company “British Voltage”, went into liquidation. However, the training centre extended the apprentice's stay for an extra year, eventually securing him a new role in January 2024 at an Aerospace company at the age of just turning 18. In March 2024, some 3 months into the apprenticeship the apprentice was invited to a meeting which was arranged on the day and vaguely told that the company 'needed more' from him, without any clear guidance or explanation of what they needed and why. Crucial support and mentoring seemed lacking from the business especially for someone just out of school and for such a high profile Aerospace business. The situation escalated quickly, with a review meeting being moved forward unexpectedly, leading to the apprentice’s termination of contract on April 3rd 2024 without proper prior notification or follow-up. As we reflect on the challenges our young apprentices and teenages face coming into our industry, I encourage my LinkedIn friends and colleagues to share their views: Is this a fair treatment of our future aspiring young Engineers.
