Residents at South Side Lofts in #Bethlehem, PA hosted an Art Show, showcasing their incredible creativity and artistic expression. The event was a vibrant celebration of community, artistry, and the unique stories that each artist brings to our community. At HDC MidAtlantic, we believe in fostering communities where everyone can reach their full potential, and to not just survive, but to thrive while living at an HDC community. This art show exemplifies our mission to create communities that are not only safe, welcoming, and affordable, but also rich in culture and connection. By providing platforms for our residents to share their talents and passions, we are building a supportive and inclusive environment that nurtures personal growth and strengthens community bonds. Thank you to all the artists who participated and everyone who attended to support our local talent! #affordablehousing #strongcommunities #residentshowcase #buildingcommunity

An interesting article from Ruth Bloomfield in the Evening Standard this week spotlighting Peckham and the impact that growing popularity and rising rents is having on the local community. Turner.Works project Peckham Levels is mentioned in the article as an example of positive development in the area. Peckham Levels embodies our approach to delivering places that are both commercially successful and able to meet genuine community needs. Following close collaboration and consultation with the local community, we transformed a derelict car park into a vibrant social and arts space, which provides employment and affordable creative workspace (prioritised for local people), and injects profits back into supporting the community. We applied the same way of thinking when designing Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in Peckham. At its core, Mountview is designed to break down barriers to entry into an historically hard-to-access industry for young people from all backgrounds, also offering affordable spaces for local community arts groups and revenue-driving cafés and bar. As we move forward, let's prioritise projects that seamlessly integrate with the unique character of a place, avoiding the creation of buildings that feel out of place and, inadvertently, displace the very people and businesses that define the community. https://lnkd.in/eqzRiEVm

Artists have begun to collaborate with local governments and city officials to increase public engagement, increase racial equity planning, and environmentally friendly building structures. A study from the National Endowment for the Arts and Americans for the Arts Impact Wheel shows that “increased presence per capita of the arts and culture no-nonprofits and entertainment establishments correlates with increased livability.” Artists and cultural workers who are involved in local community planning with city planners show an increase of economic growth generating over $1 Billion in economic impact each year. Increasing community engagement and collaborating with city planners increase communities interests in local issues and discussion of Infrastructure. Art and culture is a powerful social tool that can help bring solutions to housing needs, innovate new housing models, and build communities-up to thrive! We believe artists should have access to safe and affordable housing. Artists play a CRITICAL role in defining the vibrancy and vitality of neighborhoods and cities. Areas where artists cluster often become central hubs for a city or town, vastly increasing the monetary and cultural value of the surrounding community. 🔋 CULTURE ANCHORS AND UNIFIES COMMUNITIES: A variety of research from Housing Matters “Arts Create Cultural Cohesion in Changing Communities, “ shows that common cultural history, whether hip hop, community murals, or global heritage and craft, culture has the power to forge community dialogues about housing preservation that celebrates an area’s unique culture and reflects the needs and values of all who live there 🎉 📈 20% RISE IN PROPERTY VALUES: According to Dorchester Art Housing Collaborative and Americans for the Arts, having a cultural organization in a community has been shown to increase nearby residential property values by up to 20% 🤯 Here are some additional resources from organizations who help develop, advocate, and create equitable real estate housing for artists and culture bearers: 🔸ArtPlace America – http://www.artspace.org 🔸Artplace – https://lnkd.in/diDiTPgB 🔸NeighborWorks America – https://lnkd.in/dWrDynmi 🔸Rebuild Foundation – https://lnkd.in/dZnreFcz 🔸National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) – https://lnkd.in/dSpGnWCM #arts #art #housing #artshousing #artsimpact #housingcirisis #commnunities #community #data

Peter Tonge Consulting - We can exceed your goals and reach accessibility and inclusion excellence, together
Arts and Culture Allies Creating an inclusive environment requires not just intent but real support—adequate staffing, accessible facilities, and resources to ensure that the experience is a positive one for everyone. The devaluation of art and event spaces perpetuates the struggle for accessibility. Inadequate funding, no extra investment, and a lack of updated physical spaces often limit accessibility. Arts administrators are forced to choose between program funding and accessibility, depriving individuals with disabilities not only of the profound impact of showcasing their art but also of attending, supporting, and being a part of art. To our art administrators, I see you. I see your struggle, and I want you to know that your struggle is mine. I recognize the genuine effort you put into creating spaces that embrace diversity. Your desire to have me there is reciprocal, want to be there just as much! Recognizing that spaces and places can't be audited with the same lens, we must incorporate the devaluing and disinvestment that has occurred in artistic and creative spaces. It's about building networks and grassroots initiatives to fill those gaps, creating a bottom-up movement that values accessibility and inclusion in every corner. Access is for everyone! The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us—fostering creativity, empathy, and beauty. The arts also strengthen our communities socially, educationally, and economically. In Massachusetts, arts and culture is a $27.2 billion industry—4.2% of the state economy—and supports 135,181 jobs (bigger than construction, education, and transportation). The arts accelerate economic recovery: a growth in arts employment has a positive and causal effect on overall employment (U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis). Springfield’s nonprofit arts industry alone generates $82.4 million in economic activity annually—spending by organizations and their audiences—which supports 1,483 jobs and generates $15.3 million in local, state, and federal government revenue (Americans for the Arts AEP6 study) Randy Cohen MASSCreative Mass Cultural Council Tiffany Allecia M.Ed.

"Given the incredible historic significance of neon signs, the place they hold in the hearts of community members, the economic value they can provide in revitalizing our communities, and the danger they continue to face without strategic action, working toward solutions that preserve historic neon signs is imperative to authentically retain and enhance sense of place in our downtown districts."
