If you're looking to make the move to a career in #instructionaldesign, you may find yourself wondering just exactly what it is instructional designers do. I was there too when I was looking to leave the k-12 teaching world behind. I discovered instructional design, and found a few videos of instructional designers describing what their work is like, but I always seemed to come away with more questions. Now that I'm an instructional designer in a large public school district, I want to help those wondering about ID to get a good picture of what an ID job looks like. So, Devlin Peck allowed me to create a video for his YouTube channel to do just that. Of course, the role can look different depending on the industry, the size of the ID team, and a variety of other factors, but I think the video will give prospective IDs a good idea of what the job might look like for them. Check out the video with the link in the comments below. And to any fellow IDs who may check out the video: let everybody know in the comments what similarities and differences there are in your ID job!

An interviewer I had prior to Franciscan asked me the question: "Have you ever been asked to do something that wasn't a part of your job description?" And -yes- I mean... job descriptions can be pretty vague. I have come to the realization that the reason for that is because there is a lack of understanding of what an instructional designer is. I think that having a type of career where people ask "What's that" is very liberating! I can really get creative with this but here is a concise definition of what and ID-er is and what he or she does is left up to interpretation. An instructional designer uses or facilitates the instructional design process (like ADDIE- or Dick, Carey, and Carey methods) to design, develop, and test educational tools, modules, and training programs to test their effectiveness in knowledge transfer. I have been getting out from behind my desk as a "developer" to discover the different stages of education at Franciscan. At a committee for falls and mobility, there was a question as to why I was there. Reasonable inquiry as I don't work with patients. My short answer is "I am a systems thinker." Last year I worked with subject matter experts to develop a WBT (Web-based- training) module on a mobility protocol and its documentation. To find out during this meeting that different forms of training (one-on-one and WBT) for this particular documentation has been seen to be a challenge for staff was eye opening. When education is provided- a good ROI is (believe it or not) a part of what an instructional designer does. I get projects completed and assigned. But now I do want to spend some more time to be flexible in my inquiry. All of that is to say it is not in my "job description" but it is what I do. (Below is a picture of me with a camera about ready to record a demonstration of an assisted fall.) #instructionaldesign #education #adulteducation

Freelance Instructional Designer 💡 eLearning Developer 💡 Learning Experience Designer 💡 Contract eLearning Designer
How do instructional designers actually spend their day? This is something I wondered as I was changing careers. I knew the tasks an instructional designer was responsible for, but I wasn't sure what that looked like day-to-day. Maybe you're transitioning to instructional design and wondering the same thing. Let me demystify it for you! The Devlin Peck team surveyed over 1,000 instructional designers to find out what life was actually like on the job. In this week's video, I use that survey data to paint a picture of what a month may look like and we even focus on a day in the life of an instructional designer. Check it out with the link in the comments below! If you're an ID, what task(s) take up the majority of your day-to-day work? If you're new to ID, is there anything that surprised you? Let us know! #LinkedInWithDevlin #InstructionalDesign #Learning #LearningAndDevelopment #eLearning

Instructional Designer and L&D specialist. Language-obsessed writing nerd with nearly two decades of experience educating and empowering others.
If you're an experienced #instructionaldesigner in my network who's #opentowork and looking for a remote opportunity, check out this Senior ID role at Purdue. I wanted to re-share this job ad with a little more context about my experience working here. If you're familiar with my content, you should already know I'm brutally honest about… pretty much everything. In my previous role, I was working 50 hours a week, I was basically "on call" 24/7, and I was completely burned out. I wanted to grow my skills while finding some semblance of balance. I found it at Purdue. A few notable things I'll highlight: 💡 My coworkers are not only knowledgeable but kind, empathetic, and eager to share their knowledge and expertise–all of which is incredibly rare in academia. 💡 Our team is growing. Purdue is making incredible investments in online education and course design, which means I've had many opportunities to work with some amazing SMEs on a diverse array of courses and projects. This summer alone, I've worked on courses related to Python coding and data analytics, Lithography, Sterile Processing certifications, and a host of Lean Six Sigma topics. 💡 Our input is actually valued, and this is one of the first academic roles I've held where it's clear that managers are actually listening to their team's needs, concerns, and suggestions. 💡 We're given opportunities to grow our skills and play to our strengths. I was apprehensive about transitioning to ID because it was not exactly aligned with my previous experience. However, our team includes folks from diverse academic backgrounds and skill sets, and folks are often afforded opportunities to align their strengths with the projects we work on. In short, it's been a great place to work. If you have questions about the role, I'm happy to answer… or point you in the direction of someone better equipped to provide insight. 🛑 If you've made it this far, you should also know about the following requirements of this role, since it's a Senior ID position: ➡ Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Educational Technology or related field ➡ Three (3) years of instructional design experience ➡ One (1) year of direct experience working one on one with faculty, instructors, or subject matter experts to design, develop, and support delivery of instruction ➡ Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of experience and education

Notes of an instructional designer… One of the things I love most about instructional design is how it brings together so many different elements. It’s truly cross-disciplinary and draws from a wide range of fields, such as: · Design thinking · Cognitive science · Technology · Learning science · Psychology · The art of communication · Educational theory · Graphic design · Multimedia development · User experience design I'm continually amazed by how much depth there is to this job… and all that complexity? It’s an endless source of inspiration for me. There's always something new to explore and learn. Sure, it can be challenging at times… but that’s what makes being an instructional designer so captivating and rewarding!
