Watch this video provided by Malama Learning Center to learn more on how sheep can lessen #wildfire risks. Shermaih “Bulla” Iaea, a retired firefighter, spent most of his 28-year career at the Waianae fire station. In 2018, Bulla and his wife were trapped on their six-acre farm when a wildfire furiously spread through the Waianae Valley. He saw firsthand at the level of devastation a wildfire can cause and lost 36 mango trees, 4 or 5 lychee trees and his entire aquaculture business. Bulla focuses his time on reducing the ‘fuel’ to potential wildfires. In addition to cutting down the trees in the wildland urban interface (zone that transitions from wilderness to human activity) that surrounds his community, he aims to reduce the grass using sheep. Sheep love to eat grass. It’s a simple way to reduce the fuel rather than constantly maintaining the area with a lawnmower.

When an oil spill occurs, your first thought might be about the impact it will have on the environment. But the effects can be far-reaching. When the oil spill occurred in Poole Harbour at the end of March, fishing and shellfish harvesting were suspended, with the sale of shellfish halted for weeks. This would have had a direct impact on the livelihoods of local people who depend on the fishing industry. Just another reason why a fast response to a spill of any kind is vital! #SpillCare #OilSpills #Aquaculture

As of today, July 3, all Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) districts are in fire season. This means that to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires, fire restrictions may be in place where you live or at a destination you plan to visit or recreate. With a heat wave expected from July 4th into next week, now is the time to brush up on your wildfire prevention knowledge. Together, we can prevent wildfire and #keeporegongreen. Tips include: • Know before you go. Campfires may be banned or only allowed in approved campgrounds. • Make sure your campfire is cool to the touch before going to sleep or leaving your site. Don’t forget to Drown, Stir, Repeat. • Backyard debris burning either requires a burn permit during fire season or is prohibited altogether. If you burned earlier this spring, go back and check on your debris burn site to make sure nothing reignites due to the heat. • Don’t flick a cigarette onto the ground. It may be just enough to start a fire. • Don’t park or idle over dried grass. • Don’t drag tow chains. • Check local restrictions and fire danger levels. Learn more at https://ow.ly/YmPk50SuRAs

#Fires are a topic in our daily news feeds. Every year #wildfires are becoming more extensive and affecting even bigger areas. Could be fire risk prevention and fire management a way to go? We believe that the answer is YES. Communities in the tropics have lived and used fire as part of their traditional practices. What if we learn from them and work with them? In Bolivia, our partner IBIF Bolivian Institute of Forest Investigation, has been working closely with the municipalities of Ascensión de Guarayos and Urubichá in the Guarayos landscape where fire is an integral component of existing farming practices to develop fire management tools, early warning systems and fire brigades, as well as regulations that help prevent wildfires from occurring within and around the Guarayos Indigenous Territory. There are many examples of good forestry practices reducing #wildfire risk by now, but stakeholders who don't trust leaders (or the science) sometimes block sensible projects in CA and OR. It's going to require much more funding to ring communities near un-tended areas, but this new normal is really just learning from the wisdom of indigenous ways to make sure burns happen on our terms.
