How I choose to remember TWA. On this day, 22 years ago, Trans World Airlines (#TWA) bid farewell to the skies with a very humble MD-83 named Wings of Pride. It marked the end of an era, as everything about TWA was absorbed by American Airlines (#AA) after that date. This last flight, a short Kansas City-Saint Louis-Las Vegas trip, felt like TWA - once a prominent international airline connecting the US with so many different and unique places around the world - disappeared through the backdoor, quietly slipping away from the aviation stage. Yet, TWA was no ordinary airline; it was a pioneer that etched its legacy into the history of American aviation. Reflecting on my own experiences aboard TWA flights, two particularly exotic journeys stand out vividly. The first one was a flight from Lisbon to Barcelona aboard a majestic Lockheed L-1011, an extension of its JFK service. TWA's traffic rights on this daily route made it not only the most affordable but also the most frequent option for a long time. The second was my only Boeing 747-100 experience: from St. Louis to JFK. Two short trips on two different wide-bodies airplanes easily confirmed the airline's claim: the most comfortable way to fly. While I am a staunch advocate for consolidation in our industry, the fusion of TWA into American Airlines left a void that mere statistics and market shares cannot fill. TWA wasn't just an airline; it was a symbol of innovation, adventure, and the golden age of aviation. As the years pass, I choose to remember TWA not for its quiet exit but for the roaring engines of the Lockheed L-1011 and the majestic ascent of the Boeing 747-100. [SECRET OR NOT SECRET?]   Like many programs, Air France KLM's Flying Blue program had a secret, unpublished top top tier status, Ultimate. "Had" because they have now decided to make it fully public.   Is this good or not? On one hand, it is more and more difficult to keep such levels secret with FlyerTalks etc. By publishing it, the program takes back the control of communication.   On the other side, you take out the mystery of the offer and you empower members to make a clear rational decision whether it is worth to make the stretch from the official top tier level to that secret level.   Only time will tell how this will work out for Flying Blue, but maybe the latter point will hit them: Can you really motivate people to go from 300 XP on any SkyTeam carrier (Platinum) with decent benefits to 900 XP (only on AF/KL) for some not so impressive additional benefits?   Any thoughts?   #globalflight

With Joe Buckley on a pre IGBAA conference tour visiting the Boeing 314 Clipper Flying boat which First flew to Foynes Ireland in August 1939. 8 Operators including Airfrance Transatlantique, Imperial Airways and American International Airways used to operate this route. Saving precious time for well heeled passengers between the Americas and Europe. Todays Private Jets, not to mention commercial jets, could take some notes on the volume of space. As well as a delux apartment the guests had a 14 seat dinning room, Men and women were provided with separate dressing rooms, and white-coated stewards served five and seven-course meals with gleaming silver service from two waiters, 300 pounds of shrimp, asparagus steak, fresh strawberries and mashed potato would be served during the trip as well as champagne and other drinks. Crew were 4 pilots, 2 engineers, 2 Radio operators, 1 Navigator and two flight attendants. Of interest the sea/airport at Foynes gave birth to the Famous Irish Coffee a beverages designed to warm up the passengers from the challenging weather. A round trip from New York to Ireland cost around $675 (equivalent to $14,000 in 2022). Maximum speed: 210 mph (340 km/h, 180 kn) at 6,200 ft (1,890 m) Cruise speed: 188 mph (303 km/h, 163 kn) at 66.5% power at 11,000 ft (3,353 m) Range: 3,685 mi (5,930 km, 3,202 nmi) normal Flying boats are not over, China 🇨🇳 has invested heavily in an AG600 from AVIC called the « Water Dragon » which can take 50 passengers or be a firefighting rescue boat. How large cruise ships maneuver in the harbor! They can move sideways.... The oasis-class Wonder of the Seas is the world’s biggest cruise ship. It is owned by Royal Caribbean International. Delivered in January 2022, it is 1,188 feet long and started operations in March 2022. It can accommodate 6,988 passengers and 2,300 crew members. It has four bow thrusters, with 7500 Horsepower each. It can attain a cruising speed of up to 22 knots. The Wonder of the Seas has a gross tonnage of 236,857 tons. For comparison, Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier has a gross tonnage of 100,000 tons.
