Another personal post... Our son, Miller, just spent two weeks playing Mark Cohen in Children's Musical Theater of San Jose's production of Rent. I'm not sure I've ever been so happy for him. It was the role of a lifetime and hopefully a stepping stone to his future career. I've been reflecting on this tour de force of a production and thinking about what it takes to be successful. Top of mind for me as we integrate our new organization is creating and nurturing a culture of trust so we can move faster and be successful. 🌟 Be open to notes. Miller, the entire cast, and the directorial team have to listen to each other to pull off a successful production. I want everyone on my team, especially junior team members, to open my eyes to what they think can be done more effectively. I also want to be able to mentor them in a way that helps them grow and builds them up. Their success drives the success of the organization. 🌟 No one succeeds alone. It takes an army of talent to pull off CMT productions. The kids on stage are supported by makeup and hair artists, costume designers (ask me about the time I was tasked with weaving a mechanism into Cinderella's dress so that her ball gown would "magically" appear as she spun in circles on stage... 😨), prop managers, musicians, directors, vocal coaches, caterers...there are just too many professionals to mention. These performances don't happen without a team of people who care about each other and the success of the group. #proudmom #teamwork #trust

*** The Met Gala is a night to standout, to dress to impress and really make a statement. *** Who ended up getting most of the press, the woman of the moment, who can do no wrong, Zendaya! She knows how to grow her brand right!!! *** All the press and news focused on her OTT dress and look. And why wouldn't they? The more extreme, the more interest, the more people talk about you. *** Zendaya is a master of using fashion and costume to create attention. She did it at the Dune 2 Premiere in London and countless other times. By doing so it makes it more than her own beauty and looks, it is the theatre, the shock, the fun. *** She has grown her personal brand perfectly, and she does it with the intent to become the most bankable Hollywood actor. Studios know if they cast her she'll create a massive amount of 'free marketing' with all the buzz that she generates. *** This is an example to all those in business. Look to find ways to create attraction and attention. 🎭 The arts love to bolster inclusivity, but does the industry really follow it? As a plus-size performer, I have been told "no" far more times than I have heard "yes." Although this is standard practice in the performing arts industry, especially as a woman, my odds of getting cast in a show are unfortunately slimmer than those of my skinnier counterparts. But why? Well, look at Hollywood. Look at Broadway. Most of the performers that you see in productions are smaller. Thinner. This is the "standard," even though the actual average size for women in the U.S. is a 16, which teeters on the edge of "plus size." So, what needs to change? OUR AESTHETICS! For centuries, directors and creatives have been so laser-focused on aesthetics in the performing arts that they then forgo and miss out on great talent that they could've had. Take the role of Audrey in the musical "Little Shop of Horrors" as an example. Audrey is always seen as a skinny, Caucasian woman with blonde hair. But nowhere in the script does it say that Audrey HAS to be any of those things. That's just what is imprinted in our minds from the movies and original casts. The key to actually embracing inclusivity in the performing arts, especially in terms of body inclusivity, is to truly cast WHO IS BEST FOR THE ROLE, regardless of their body type, race/ethnicity, and/or sexuality. These facets should ONLY be considered if the script EXPLICITLY calls for an actor to fit one/more of these components for that specific character. For example, an actor playing Motormouth Maybelle in "Hairspray" MUST be a Black plus-sized actress, because it is integral to the character and her story. Besides that, there is no reason we can't have a plus-size Belle in "Beauty and the Beast," or a plus-size Glinda in "Wicked." In fact, if we highlight those performers more and more in the performing arts space, maybe more plus-size performers like myself will hear more "yes's" than "no's." ❓What's your stance on the topic of body inclusivity in the arts or in other fields?
