"But I've spent my whole career in the restaurant industry. It's all I know. Nobody will hire me for something outside the industry." And that was the conversation I had this morning with a good friend of mine, someone I have known for more than 25 years. He's one of the best operators I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He's literally made millions for the companies that he has worked for. And yet, he didn't recognize his own value. I've long held that restaurant operators have all the skillsets they need to contribute to almost any business, including their own business if that's what they aspire to. Operations? Yep HR? Yep Production? Oh, yeah Facilities Management? Absolutely P&L Management? Nobody better at this than a restaurateur Inventory Management? See previous comment Quality Control? Yeppers Marketing? Yes Training? All day every day Leadership? Around the clock Adaptable? Every minute of every hour Strategic Planning? Yep Tactics? Aces in their places Customer Service? Yes, and there are some challenging customers out there Staff retention? Key core responsibility So, I connected him with a resume writer to help him. You know, someone who's all about people, the food, and giving guests the time of their lives. The challenge: Building a top-notch management team – General Manager, Deputy General Manager, and Assistant Manager. One of the best lessons I learned as an Assistant General Manager aspiring to become a General Manager was this Advocating for myself. I was relentless in making my desires for growth known to my boss and his boss. Once I spoke up, they laid out a path for my growth and development, which ultimately lead to my promotion as a General Manager. Never assume that other's know your desires. How I learned to manage my time better as a restaurant manager: (after years of being in the weeds) - I started putting office / admin time on the schedule for the rest of my team to see - If I was short on managers, I trained 2-3 trusted staff members to handle minor "manager duties" like voids, comps, and customer visits while I stepped away for short periods (never during peak times) - I time blocked 30 min - an hour before I needed to be on the floor to knock out administrative tasks and emails - I stopped pretending I wasn't an introvert and started owning that I needed quiet time to focus and get tasks done I transformed from being constantly stressed and cranky, to a happier and more engaged leader. I was able to build community and a stronger work culture. Remember, you are allowed to step away from your team and guests to get the invisible work done. PS - You can do it, too!
