Mastering the Art of Networking in Business School or University 🎓🤝 The phrase "Your network is your net worth" resonates deeply when navigating the academic corridors of a business school or university. Here's how you can effectively expand and nurture your connections: 🔸 Social Mixers: These gatherings aren't just for relaxation. Attend them, introduce yourself, and engage in stimulating conversations. It's a subtle way to know your peers and professors. 🔸 Active Club Participation: Dive deep into the plethora of clubs that pique your interest. By actively participating, not only do you hone skills but also interact with like-minded individuals who might become crucial connections in the future. 🔸 Event Committees: Volunteering or joining organizing committees for fests or events positions you at the hub of activity. It gives you direct access to guest speakers, alumni, and influential personalities, paving the way for valuable relationships. 🔸 Host Your Events: A game changer indeed! By hosting events or parties, you take the lead in curating experiences for others. This positions you as a proactive individual, makes you memorable and naturally draws people towards you. Remember, effective networking isn't about quantity but quality. It's about fostering genuine connections, understanding the give-and-take dynamic, and maintaining these relationships beyond your academic tenure. So, immerse, engage, and build a network that supports and uplifts. #NetworkingTips #BusinessSchool #UniversityLife #BuildingConnections #EngageAndEmerge #RelationshipBuilding #FutureLeaders #AcademicNetworking

3 simple ways to improve networking events Last night, I was back at UCL School of Management with Peter Mandeno (PhD) co-facilitating a networking event for Business Analytics Alumni and current students. Let's be honest, networking event can sometimes really suck. Why? - Everyone just chats to those they know - You repeat your elevator pitch multiple times (where do you work, what do you do?) and don't get to the other interesting stuff that makes us who we are - You get stuck with one person or 1 group So, we made a few tweaks that can help everyone connect better. Just a few design choices can really create ripples that can transform an evening: 1. Creating name labels that distinguish current students from alumni, making it easier to approach others 2. Creating 3 chapters to the evening (Arriving - a chance to reconnect with old friends, Facilitated Connecting - a chance to meet new people, and Emergence - self-led social) to allow for different types of connecting to take place. Ensuring there is time to talk to old friends, and meet new ones too. 3. Creating a clear container (space and permission) for the students to meet a randomised group of 5 others and clear prompts that allow for sharing at both a person and professional level (name, what you're working on/in or would like to, something you love that you could talk about for hours on end) Really simple but highly effective! In the words of an attendee, 'it was a great opportunity to interact with similar minds who work in various roles in different industries'. #networking #careers #alumni #students #businessanalytics #summer #social #humanconnectivity

In sum: Networking is not a game of numbers. When you move from an environment or field where #networking is a “nice-to-do” to one where it’s almost a hard requirement, you can feel overwhelmed by the emphasis. It’s also easy to interpret the emphasis as “attend the most networking events that you can, and meet the most number of people you can per event”. I’m still on the learning curve, however, I don’t think that is what is meant nor do I think it works. Rather than focusing on how many persons you meet or the “type” of person you meet, stay open-minded and hone in on genuine and enjoyable conversations. This is more likely to lead you to meaningful connections. People do business with those they know, like, and trust; and it takes more than an elevator pitch to hit those notes. You’re welcome 🙂. POV - I attended my first Stern Alumni event and enjoyed the warm company of senior Sternies Azeez Salami, Brian Hernandez Munashe Makava, and many others. I underestimated the excitement of seeing my classmates again. Had to remind myself it had only been a few weeks since we stopped being in one another’s faces 😅. We are thrilled to announce an upcoming Alumni Speed Dating event, designed to foster connections, share experiences, and create a supportive network between alumni and current students. This is a unique chance for students to gain valuable advise and perspectives from those who’ve walked the path before them, and for alumni to give back by guiding the next generation. We are looking for: - Alumni who are willing to share their professional journeys, the obstacles they’ve faced, and how they’ve overcome them. - Students who are curious, eager to learn from experienced professionals, and willing to share their own visions and concerns. Reasons to attend: - For Alumni: Reconnect with your own experiences, share your journey since graduation, and inspire students with your successes and learning moments. - For Students: Discuss your aspirations, challenges, and get real-world insights that textbooks simply can’t teach. - Networking: Build meaningful connections that can last a lifetime.
